Axions, higher-groups, and emergent symmetry

T. Daniel Brennan et al.

Summary: This study discusses the higher-form global symmetries of axions, which are periodic scalar fields coupled to gauge fields through the instanton density. It is found that these symmetries typically combine into a higher-group structure, where symmetries acting on different dimension operators are mixed. The study utilizes this structure to derive model independent constraints on renormalization group flows for long-distance axion theories, resulting in universal inequalities on energy scales where various infrared symmetries emerge.

Global 4-group symmetry and 't Hooft anomalies in topological axion electrodynamics

Yoshimasa Hidaka et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the higher-form global symmetries and higher-group structure of a low-energy limit of (3 + 1)-dimensional axion electrodynamics, which is described by a topological action. We argue that the higher-form symmetries should have a semi-strict 4-group structure based on the consistency conditions of the topological action with background gauge fields. We also identify possible 't Hooft anomalies for the 4-group global symmetry and discuss their physical consequences.

The global form of flavor symmetries and 2-group symmetries in 5d SCFTs

Fabio Apruzzi et al.

Summary: The article discusses the existence and properties of 2-group symmetries in 5-dimensional superconformal field theories. The authors discover 2-group symmetries in 5-dimensional N=1 abelian gauge theories and determine the global forms of 0-form flavor symmetry groups in 5-dimensional SCFTs. The analysis also includes the study of 2-group symmetries in 5-dimensional N=1 non-abelian gauge theories and their relation to mixed 't Hooft anomalies between 1-form and 0-form symmetries.

Counting Nambu-Goldstone Modes of Higher-Form Global Symmetries

Yoshimasa Hidaka et al.

Summary: In this study, we discuss the counting of Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneous breaking of higher-form global symmetries. Effective field theories of NG modes are developed based on symmetry-breaking patterns, using a generalized coset construction for higher-form symmetries. The formula derived for the number of gapless NG modes involves expectation values of the commutators of conserved charges, possibly of different degrees.

Discrete theta angles, symmetries and anomalies

Po-Shen Hsin et al.

Summary: Discrete theta angles can control the symmetry extension of gauge theories by gauging global symmetry with an additional SPT phase, potentially leading to a new theory with an emergent Abelian symmetry that also participates in symmetry extension.

Chern-Weil global symmetries and how quantum gravity avoids them

Ben Heidenreich et al.

Summary: Chern-Weil global symmetries are a class of generalized global symmetries that are ubiquitous in gauge theories, characterized by Noether currents given by wedge products of gauge field strengths and difficult to break. It is believed that these symmetries are not allowed in a consistent theory of quantum gravity, leading to the necessity of breaking or gauging them when the theory is coupled to gravity. This paper explores the ways in which Chern-Weil symmetries may be broken or gauged in effective field theory and string theory, showing that familiar phenomena in string theory could be consequences of the absence of Chern-Weil symmetries in quantum gravity.

Field theories with higher-group symmetry from composite currents

Tomas Brauner

Summary: Higher-form symmetries act on extended objects, not on point particles, and can coexist with ordinary point-particle symmetries in a direct product symmetry group. When these symmetries become entangled, a more general mathematical structure related to higher categorical groups is required. Higher-group symmetry can emerge from a bottom-up perspective when physical systems contain at least two different spontaneously broken symmetries.

2-Group global symmetries and anomalies in six-dimensional quantum field theories

Clay Cordova et al.

Summary: The study of six-dimensional quantum field theories reveals the presence of mixed anomalies in little string theories but their absence in SCFTs. This discovery provides an algorithm for computing the 't Hooft anomalies of most SCFTs. Furthermore, it is proven that the a-type Weyl anomaly of all SCFTs with a tensor branch must be positive.

Generalized global symmetries of T[M] theories. Part I

Sergei Gukov et al.

Summary: This paper studies reductions of 6d theories on a d-dimensional manifold, focusing on the interplay between symmetries, anomalies, and dynamics in the resulting (6 -d)-dimensional theory. The refined notion of polarization on the manifold serves to determine the spectrum of operators in T[M-d], which often possess higher-group symmetries. Further investigations include analyzing physical implications such as symmetry breaking and enhancement in the renormalization group flow.

Generalized symmetries and 2-groups via electromagnetic duality in AdS/CFT

Oliver DeWolfe et al.

Summary: In this discussion, the electromagnetic dualization of 1-form to a 2-form in AdS(5) is shown to exchange regular and alternate boundary conditions, thereby gauging the originally global U(1) symmetry in the dual field theory. This method is then applied to a Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in AdS, resulting in a theory with a modified field strength that holographically realizes a 2-group symmetry. The holographic renormalization is explicitly carried out to verify the results, and the potential generalization to other rank fields in different dimensions is also discussed.
