Lignin valorization beyond energy use: has lignin's time finally come?

Chunbao Charles Xu et al.

Summary: Driven by the commercial availability of kraft lignin and hydrolysis lignin, there is a pressing need to valorize lignin for high-value chemical and material products. The engineering approach developed involves depolymerizing lignin into de-polymerized lignin and utilizing it to substitute petroleum-based compounds in the production of bio-based resins and foams, demonstrating technical and economic feasibility with a payback period of around 3 years for a commercial capacity of 40,000 t/y. This approach shows that lignin valorization beyond energy use can be profitable, marking a potential shift in the perception of lignin's value.
