Heterogeneous evolution of pore structure during loess collapse: Insights from X-ray micro-computed tomography

B. Yu et al.

Summary: The pore structure plays a crucial role in influencing the hydraulic properties of loess. The study found that during collapse, constricted pores and free pores display different behaviors, with the former maintaining their sizes and shapes while the latter typically closing up. This research provides new insights into the pore structure evolution associated with loess collapse, emphasizing the importance of pore morphology in addition to pore size.

Microstructure Quantification, Characterization, and Regional Variation in the Ma Lan Loess on the Loess Plateau in China

Long-Sheng Deng et al.

Summary: The Ma Lan loess is a typical structural soil with distinct regional variations influenced by factors such as source properties, aeolian power, migration distance, and erosional history. The relationships between parameters such as particle size, pore size, and throat channel length satisfy specific distribution patterns, and the loess can be classified into three categories based on its microstructure characteristics. Northern Loess Plateau primarily consists of one category of microstructure, while other locations exhibit different categories of microstructures.

Evaluation of Structural Strength and Parameters of Collapsible Loess

Lei Pan et al.

Summary: Studies conducted on collapsible loess from Xinjiang, western China, using double-oedometer tests have revealed the relationship between structural strength and parameters of the loess with moisture content and vertical pressure variations. A model has been proposed to evaluate the structural strength and parameters of collapsible loess based on the damage caused by soaking on the loess anticompression capabilities. These findings are useful for evaluating the structural strength, stability, and water sensitivity of collapsible loess for geotechnical engineers.
