Disentangling the roles of plant functional diversity and plaint traits in regulating plant nitrogen accumulation and denitrification in freshwaters

Maidul Choudhury et al.

Summary: There is a need to understand the linkages between functional diversity and ecosystem processes based on species traits. In particular, understanding the role of aquatic plant functional traits in regulating nitrogen cycling in freshwater habitats is limited. This study investigates the effects of macrophyte functional diversity and trait composition on nitrogen removal in wetlands.

Plant functional traits shape growth rate for xerophytic shrubs

C. Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the regulation of xerophytic shrubs' growth rate by their functional traits, finding that regardless of age, net assimilation rate and leaf area ratio play a principal role in driving the variation in relative growth rate among xerophytic shrubs.

Bacillus promotes invasiveness of exotic Flaveria bidentis by increasing its nitrogen and phosphorus uptake

Xue Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of exotic plant Flaveria bidentis on Bacillus diversity in the rhizosphere and found that Brevibacterium frigoritolerans had a higher relative abundance in the rhizosphere of F. bidentis compared to native grass Setaria viridis. Moreover, B. frigoritolerans in the F. bidentis rhizosphere enhanced the growth of the plant by improving nitrogen and phosphorus levels.

Beneficial rhizobacterium provides positive plant-soil feedback effects to Ageratina adenophora

Sun Yuan-yuan et al.

Summary: The study found that the content of Bacillus cereus increases in soil invaded by Ageratina adenophora, and adding A. adenophora root exudates to rhizosphere soil significantly increases the content of B. cereus, along with positive effects on certain soil parameters. Soil treatment with B. cereus promotes the degradation of allelochemicals and enhances the growth of A. adenophora.

Trophic consequences of competitive interactions in freshwater fish: Density dependent effects and impacts of inter-specific versus intra-specific competition

Vanessa De Santis et al.

Summary: Determining the impacts of intra- and inter-specific competition in freshwater ecosystems is crucial for understanding ecological changes. This study showed that increased intra-specific competition led to slower growth rates in fish, while inter-specific competition resulted in smaller trophic niche sizes. The results indicate that different types of competition can have varying effects on fish development and feeding habits.
