The dual-targeted prolyl aminopeptidase PAP1 is involved in proline accumulation in response to stress and during pollen development

Abi S. Ghifari et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers identified a prolyl aminopeptidase homologue, PAP1, which has two isoforms targeting different subcellular locations. They found that PAP1 may play a role in proline homeostasis and pollen development in plants. The results suggest that PAP1 is involved in the chloroplastic peptide processing pathway and could be important for maintaining cellular stability and activity.

Coupling to Pam16 differentially controls the dual role of Pam18 in protein import and respiratory chain formation

Chantal Priesnitz et al.

Summary: In this study, disruption of the Pam16-Pam18 heterodimer was found to cause redistribution of Pam18, decreasing protein import into mitochondria while stimulating mtHsp70-dependent assembly of respiratory chain complexes.

A new take on organelle-mediated stress sensing in plants

Isaac J. Dopp et al.

Summary: Plants have the ability to adjust their phenotype in response to environmental changes, which relies on their internal sensing and processing capabilities. Recent studies have shown that mitochondria and plastids serve as important environmental sensors in plants, triggering responses to stressful conditions and modulating gene expression, metabolism, and the energy balance between growth and defense. These findings contribute to a comprehensive hypothesis for the regulation of plant phenotypic plasticity.

FTSH4 and OMA1 mitochondrial proteases reduce moderate heat stress-induced protein aggregation

Agata Maziak et al.

Summary: Research shows that in long-term moderate heat stress, Arabidopsis plants lacking mitochondrial proteases FTSH4 or OMA1 exhibit phenotypic changes associated with accumulation of small heat-shock proteins. The proteolytic activity of FTSH4 and OMA1 plays a crucial role in protecting mitochondrial proteins against aggregation under stress. Overall, the data suggest that FTSH4 and OMA1 increase plant tolerance to long-term moderate heat stress by reducing detergent-tolerant mitochondrial protein aggregation.
