Diaporthe species associated with the maritime grass Festuca rubra subsp. pruinosa

Rufin Marie Kouipou Toghueo et al.

Summary: In this study, 22 strains of Diaporthe isolated from the roots of Festuca rubra subsp. pruinosa were characterized and two new species, Diaporthe atlantica and Diaporthe iberica, were identified. Diaporthe atlantica is the most abundant species in its host plant and is closely related to the pathogen Diaporthe sclerotioides, which affects cucurbits. It was found that Diaporthe atlantica can inhibit the growth of cucumber, melon, and watermelon.

Theoretical and Experimental Considerations for a Rapid and High Throughput Measurement of Catalase In Vitro

Ouardia Bendou et al.

Summary: A rapid and high throughput protocol has been developed to measure the catalase activity in vitro. By using a two-degree polynomial fitting of the experimental data, the initial rate of H2O2 decomposition by catalase can be determined, and statistical bias can be avoided. This protocol can be used for small scale and low cost measurement of other antioxidant enzyme activities in microplate readers.

A Diaporthe Fungal Endophyte From a Wild Grass Improves Growth and Salinity Tolerance of Tritordeum and Perennial Ryegrass

Rufin M. K. Toghueo et al.

Summary: The study found that the Diaporthe fungal endophyte belonging to the core microbiome of Festuca rubra roots can promote the growth and nutrient uptake of two agricultural grasses. The fungus produces extracellular enzymes capable of recycling organic nutrient pools and also produces the plant hormone indole 3-acetic acid, which affects plant growth and adaptability.

Summary: The protective and growth-promoting activities of Colletrotrichum and Diaporthe endophytes on tomato plants were explored and evaluated in this study. In vitro dual culture assays and greenhouse experiments confirmed the effectiveness of these endophytes in inhibiting Fusarium oxysporum and promoting the growth of tomato plants.

Desert-adapted fungal endophytes induce salinity and drought stress resistance in model crops

Mahdieh S. Hosseyni Moghaddam et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the effects of inoculating halotolerant endophytic fungi recovered from desert plants on drought and salinity stress tolerance in model agricultural plants. The fungal symbiosis increased chlorophyll concentration and plant growth under all levels of salinity and drought stress, with different stress resistance mechanisms observed in different endophyte-associated plants. These findings provide novel insights into the eco-physiological mechanisms of fungal endophyte-mediated stress tolerance in cucumber and tomato plants, highlighting the potential applications of arid and saline habitat adapted endophytes in agriculture.

Summary: Plants combat drought stress by deploying various strategies to enhance water uptake and storage, reduce water loss, and maintain osmotic balance. Understanding the mechanisms of drought response is crucial for improving crop production and adopting strategies for imparting drought tolerance in plants. Management practices include hormone application, breeding, and genetic engineering techniques to combat water deficit issues.

Mechanisms Regulating the Dynamics of Photosynthesis Under Abiotic Stresses

Izhar Muhammad et al.

Summary: Photosynthesis is crucial for plant life but is often limited by unfavorable environmental conditions and biological processes, affecting efficiency and yield. Research on plant responses to abiotic stresses and light modulation of photosynthesis can improve crop productivity. Understanding regulatory elements and gene responses to stresses can aid in developing stress-tolerant plants with higher yields.

Untapping the potential of plant mycobiomes for applications in agriculture

Maria J. Pozo et al.

Summary: Plant-fungal interactions are widespread in nature, with demonstrated benefits for plant growth and health. Fungi can enhance plant resilience, nutrition, stress tolerance, and defense mechanisms. However, limited knowledge of fungal biology and their interactions with plants in the plant microbiome context has hindered the development of optimal biotechnological applications in agrosystems and natural ecosystems. Exciting advances in molecular and systems biology offer numerous opportunities for further research in this field.
