Sorghum and maize flavonoids are detrimental to growth and survival of fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda

Debamalya Chatterjee et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that flavonoids in sorghum and maize can have an impact on the survival of fall armyworm larvae. Supplementing an artificial diet with sorghum flavonoids resulted in significant mortality and decreased body weight of the larvae. Spraying flavonoid extract on susceptible maize leaves effectively inhibited larval growth and increased mortality. Comparisons between maize lines overproducing flavonoids and their wild-type counterparts showed higher larval mortality in the former, with severe damage to the peritrophic membrane. These findings highlight the eco-friendly potential of flavonoids for fall armyworm larvae management.

Interplay of phytohormones facilitate sorghum tolerance to aphids

Sajjan Grover et al.

Summary: Interactions among phytohormones are essential for providing tolerance of sorghum plants to aphids. Through screening of sorghum inbred lines, a tolerant genotype to sugarcane aphids was identified, displaying minimal plant biomass loss and a robust photosynthetic machinery despite higher aphid population. Phytohormone analysis revealed specific changes in hormone levels in the tolerant genotype, providing insights into the mechanisms of plant tolerance to sap-sucking aphids.

CRISPR/Cas9-Mediated Targeted Mutagenesis of GmUGT Enhanced Soybean Resistance Against Leaf-Chewing Insects Through Flavonoids Biosynthesis

Yongxing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study successfully generated soybean mutants with enhanced resistance against Helicoverpa armigera and Spodoptera litura through CRISPR/Cas9-mediated targeted mutagenesis. The GmUGT gene was found to be involved in enhancing resistance to leaf-chewing insects by altering flavonoid content and gene expression patterns.

Dichotomous Role of Jasmonic Acid in Modulating Sorghum Defense Against Aphids

Sajjan Grover et al.

Summary: Jasmonic acid (JA) plays an important role in sorghum's defense against sugarcane aphids. Sorghum plants can deter aphids by increasing JA levels during the early stage of aphid feeding, but exogenous application of JA weakens this resistance. Sorghum plants deficient in JA can promote aphid settling, but reduce aphid feeding from the sap. JA also promotes aphid growth and development.

Reprogramming of sorghum proteome in response to sugarcane aphid infestation

Sajjan Grover et al.

Summary: This study revealed the proteomic changes in SCA resistant sorghum after SCA infestation, showing the suppression of plant defense-related proteins and upregulation of plant defense and signaling-related proteins. The findings were further validated through electrical penetration graph technique, which observed changes in aphid feeding behavior. These results provide insights into the mechanisms underlying sorghum resistance to SCA.

Loss of COMT activity reduces lateral root formation and alters the response to water limitation in sorghum brown midrib (bmr) 12 mutant

Manny Saluja et al.

Summary: The study focused on the impact of COMT deficiency in sorghum plants. The bmr12 mutation resulted in changes in root morphology, anatomy, and adaptation to water limitation. The mutant showed increased sensitivity to gibberellic acid, with evidence of its role in regulating reduced lateral root density in bmr12.

The Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) Brown Midrib 30 Gene Encodes a Chalcone Isomerase Required for Cell Wall Lignification

Hannah M. Tetreault et al.

Summary: The Bmr30 gene mutation results in significantly reduced CHI activity, impaired accumulation of total flavonoids and total anthocyanins. In the bmr30 mutants, the level of the flavone lignin monomer tricin was reduced 20-fold in the stem relative to wild type, and to undetectable levels in the leaf tissue of the mutants.

Effect of Soy Leaf Flavonoids on Pea Aphid Probing Behavior

Katarzyna Stec et al.

Summary: Flavonoids have different effects on the feeding behavior of pea aphids, with apigenin, daidzein, and kaempferol reducing sap ingestion intensity, while genistein has no impact. These findings provide valuable insights for breeding aphid-resistant plant cultivars in a sustainable manner.
