The Effect of Plant Density and Supplementary Irrigation on Nutritional Value of Two Safflower (Carthamustincturius L.) Forage Crops

Maryam Delfani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of planting density and supplementary irrigation on forage yield and nutritional composition of safflower. The results showed that supplementary irrigation increased forage yield and phosphorus content, while dry-land cultivation enhanced protein, ether extract, and potassium content. The Faraman cultivar exhibited better yield and certain traits compared to Goldasht. Increasing planting density improved forage yield, but lower density was more suitable for nutritional value and higher density for reducing neutral detergent fiber. The study concluded that safflower could adapt to drought conditions and increase yield in semi-arid regions, making it suitable for dry-land areas as well.

Pretreatment with Chitosan Arbitrates Physiological Processes and Antioxidant Defense System to Increase Drought Tolerance in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)

Ghulam Mustafa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of exogenous chitosan (Ct) on biomass and quality of alfalfa under drought stress, and found that Ct seed priming significantly improved the drought tolerance of alfalfa and enhanced its physiological and biochemical characteristics, including chlorophyll pigments, water relations, and antioxidative capacity. Ct seed priming also improved the quality traits of drought-stressed alfalfa.

Shade Delayed Flowering Phenology and Decreased Reproductive Growth of Medicago sativa L.

Fengfei Qin et al.

Summary: Shading delays flowering and reduces reproductive growth in alfalfa, leading to lower pollen viability and stigma receptivity, as well as reduced quantity and quality of seeds. However, delayed flowering and reduced reproduction are important strategies for alfalfa to cope with shading.

Irrigation and nitrogen fertilization influence on alfalfa yield, nutritive value, and resource use efficiency in an arid environment

Muhammad Kamran et al.

Summary: In this study, the potential effects of irrigation and nitrogen application on alfalfa forage yield, quality, and resource use efficiency in arid agro-climatic conditions were investigated. The results showed that irrigation and nitrogen had significant effects on forage yield, quality, and resource use efficiency. Increasing irrigation amount led to an increase in forage yield, but a decrease in crude protein content and water use efficiency. Similarly, increasing nitrogen application resulted in a decline in forage yield, nutritive quality, and resource use efficiency. The study concluded that irrigation of 450 mm coupled with 150 kg N ha-1 showed the most promising effects for optimal forage yield, enhanced nutritive values, and greater resource use efficiency of alfalfa in arid regions.

Limited mitigating effects of elevated CO2 in young aspen trees to face drought stress

Fran Lauriks et al.

Summary: Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO(2)) can mitigate the adverse effects of moderate drought on leaf functioning, but its effects on tree responses to severe drought and throughout the growing season are largely unknown. This study found that eCO(2) mainly reduced the drought susceptibility of leaf processes during the late season and under moderate drought, but had limited effect on whole-tree functioning and non-structural carbohydrates depletion caused by drought.

Comparative metabolomic analysis of the metabolism pathways under drought stress in alfalfa leaves

Qiaoli Ma et al.

Summary: The study revealed that drought-tolerant alfalfa cultivars produced more differentially expressed metabolites and accumulated important metabolites under drought conditions, enhancing their tolerance; while the drought-sensitive cultivars exhibited more severe drought stress symptoms, such as reduced lipid metabolism and up-regulated amino acid synthesis.

Water content, carbohydrate accumulation, and secondary metabolites in Allium victorialis sprouts exposed to shoot cutting in varied irradiations

Changwei Zhou et al.

Summary: Victory onion is an important edible plant that is affected by different light spectra conditions in terms of leaf growth characteristics and accumulation of secondary metabolites. Wider and larger leaves tend to have more accumulation of dry mass, water content, and soluble sugar, while leaves with deeper colors generally have opposite effects.

The effect of individual and combined drought and heat stress under elevated CO2 on physiological responses in spring wheat genotypes

Lamis Osama Anwar Abdelhakim et al.

Summary: Elevated CO2 levels can mitigate the negative impact of moderate stress on all genotypes, with no distinctive responses observed between heat sensitive and tolerant genotypes in some measured parameters. Heat tolerant genotypes grown at elevated CO2 showed higher net photosynthetic rates and maintained maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry under heat and combined stress compared to ambient CO2 levels.

Spectral effect of streetlamps on urban trees: A simulated study on tissue water, nitrogen, and carbohydrate contents in maple and oak

Ping Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the physiological performance of maple and oak seedlings under white light and red plus blue light exposure was not significantly different, with streetlamp lighting impacting tree growth primarily through prolonged photoperiod rather than specific light spectrum. Maple showed a strong response of water uptake to streetlamp lighting at the cost of carbohydrate consumption, while oak had limited demand for water-use for growth.

Drought limits alpine meadow productivity in northern Tibet

Mingjie Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that soil drought had the most severe impact on alpine meadow productivity in the Tibetan Plateau, while atmospheric drought and compound drought also significantly inhibited productivity. These drought types significantly increased sensible heat flux, providing positive feedback to droughts and leading to further decreases in GPP.

Effects of nitrogen addition and mowing on nitrogen- and water-use efficiency of Artemisia frigida in a grassland restored from an abandoned cropland

Huajie Diao et al.

Summary: The study found that in the Artemisia frigida plants in semi-arid regions, nitrogen addition significantly decreased NUE, while mowing increased WUE. The response of NUE in Artemisia frigida was related to the utilization of different nitrogen sources such as NH4+ and NO3-, which changed during succession. Overall, N addition and mowing had impacts on the NUE and WUE of Artemisia frigida.
