Plant hairy roots for the production of extracellular vesicles with antitumor bioactivity

Eleonora Boccia et al.

Summary: This study establishes a versatile and standardized method to purify plant extracellular vesicles (EVs) from hairy root cultures, and identifies Salvia dominica hairy roots as an excellent platform for EV production. The EVs derived from these roots show selective and strong pro-apoptotic activity in pancreatic and mammary cancer cells.

Elucidating Methods for Isolation and Quantification of Exosomes: A Review

Talitha Keren Kurian et al.

Summary: Exosomes, the smallest extracellular vesicles found in most biological fluids, play crucial roles in cell signaling, immune response, tumor metastasis, as well as having diagnostic and therapeutic potentials. Various standard methods for isolating exosomes, along with quantification techniques, have been discussed in this comprehensive review, highlighting their importance in biomedical research.

UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Plant Extracellular Vesicles and Nanovesicles: Focus on Secondary Metabolites, Proteins and Lipids with Perspectives on Their Potential and Sources

Eric Woith et al.

Summary: While human EVs have been extensively studied, plant-derived EVs have received less attention. This study introduces plant cell suspension culture as a new source for plant EVs and nanovesicles, revealing properties and mechanisms similar to animal cell-derived exosomes and microvesicles. Proteins present in plant EVs indicate potential mechanisms for cell wall passage and suggest similarities in EV secretion mechanisms between plant and animal cells.
