Martha Natukunda et al.

Summary: This study characterized the canopy-layer specific transcriptome of sorghum and identified differentially expressed genes related to leaf angle. The candidate genes are involved in various biological processes such as transmembrane transport, hormone regulation, oxidation-reduction, and photosynthesis. Further investigation is needed to understand the potential pleiotropic effects of these genes.

Transcriptome analysis uncovering regulatory networks and hub genes of Populus photosynthesis and chlorophyll content

Kang Du et al.

Summary: Photosynthesis plays a vital role in plant growth and is influenced by environmental signals and circadian rhythms. By analyzing the transcriptome of two poplar progenies with different photosynthesis rates, we identified genes related to circadian rhythm and photosynthesis. We found that circadian oscillators regulate photosynthesis-associated nuclear genes and carotenoid metabolism genes before dawn, while other factors affect leaf size, stomatal movement, and chlorophyll accumulation.

Arabidopsis Toxicos en Levadura 12 Modulates Salt Stress and ABA Responses in Arabidopsis thaliana

Feng Kong et al.

Summary: The gene ATL12 plays an important role in the response to salt stress and abscisic acid (ABA) in Arabidopsis thaliana. Overexpression of ATL12 increases the expression of salt stress-associated genes and ABA-responsive genes, and leads to higher levels of reactive oxygen species. Mutants of atl12 are sensitive to salt stress and ABA, and have shorter root length. The findings suggest that ATL12 modulates the response to salt stress and is involved in the ABA signaling pathway.

Comparative physiological and coexpression network analyses reveal the potential drought tolerance mechanism of peanut

Jingyao Ren et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of physiological responses and gene expression in drought-tolerant and drought-sensitive peanut varieties. The findings revealed that the drought-tolerant variety had stronger antioxidative capacities and osmotic adjustment substance accumulation ability compared to the drought-sensitive variety. KEGG analysis showed that photosynthesis was strongly affected by drought stress, especially in the drought-sensitive variety. The study also identified hub genes related to the drought response.

Evaluation of salt tolerance in common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) germplasms and the physiological responses to salt stress

Yanmei Sun et al.

Summary: This study evaluated salt tolerance in common vetch collections and investigated the underlying physiological mechanisms. The results showed that salt-tolerant collections of common vetch maintained lower levels of Na+ and higher levels of K+ and K+/Na+ ratio under salt stress compared to salt-sensitive ones. The expression of genes involved in Na+ and K+ transportation and redistribution was responsible for salt stress. Transcript levels of NHX7, HKT1, AKT2, and HAK17 were induced after salt stress, with higher levels in salt-tolerant collections. Proline accumulation and antioxidant defense system were also promoted in salt-tolerant collection. These findings suggest that salt tolerance in common vetch is associated with the maintenance of ion homeostasis, gene expression, proline accumulation, and antioxidant defense system.

Manipulation of the transcription factor SlNAC1 for improved tolerance to abiotic stress in tomato

Xiangli Niu et al.

Summary: The tomato transcription factor SlNAC1 plays a crucial role in abiotic stress response and its instability is attributed to the acidic amino acid-rich transactivation domain TAD1. By manipulating SlNAC1 at both gene and protein levels, the researchers were able to enhance tomato's tolerance to cold, drought, and salt stresses, providing a successful example for developing crops adapted to abiotic stress.

The trade-offs between resistance and resilience of forage stay robust with varied growth potentials under different soil water and salt stress

Yanzhe Hu et al.

Summary: Water shortage and soil salinization are important factors limiting crop production globally. This study investigates the resistance and resilience of forage grasses under different water and salt stress conditions, and finds that their relationships remain stable despite the effects of stress. These findings have implications for assessing the adaptation and stability of perennial forage grasses, as well as predicting long-term yields and managing cultivars under soil water and salt stress.

Effect of CAX1a TILLING mutations on photosynthesis performance in salt-stressed Brassica rapa plants

Eloy Navarro-Leon et al.

Summary: Salinity is an environmental factor that reduces plant productivity, but modifying Ca2+ cation exchangers (CAX) transporters could increase plant tolerance to salinity. Through Targeting Induced Local Lesions in Genomes (TILLING), researchers generated mutants of Brassica rapa CAX1a transporter, with BraA.cax1a-4 showing improved photosynthetic performance under saline conditions. This study highlights BraA.cax1a-4 as a useful mutation for enhancing photosynthesis in plants grown in saline conditions.

Summary: The salt tolerance of Limonium sinuatum varieties was evaluated under 250 mmol/L NaCl treatment, with Pink, Yellow, Purple, White, and Blue identified as having the strongest to weakest salt-tolerance ability. Photosynthetic rate was found to be the most reliable and positive indicator of salt tolerance. Pink variety showed the greatest increase in salt gland density under NaCl treatment, suggesting its adaptation to high-salt levels.
