Consequences of Mixotrophy on Cell Energetic Metabolism in Microchloropsis gaditana Revealed by Genetic Engineering and Metabolic Approaches

Summary: Algae of the Microchloropsis genus show promising potential for biotechnological applications due to their ability to accumulate lipid reserves. In this study, the mixotrophic response of Microchloropsis gaditana was investigated, revealing a reliance on respiratory metabolism and the beneficial effect of adding Lysogeny broth to enhance growth. Knocking out the AOX1 gene led to a loss of growth capacity when using LB, suggesting a role for reduced carbon in supporting mixotrophic growth in these algae.
