Yield and quality of Amaranthus hypochondriacus grain amaranth under drought and salinity at various phenological stages in southern Italy

Cataldo Pulvento et al.

Summary: The study found that grain amaranth yield components were not negatively affected by different irrigation volumes or irrigation time. Differences in seed yield were caused by water quality, with salinity significantly reducing seed yield. The combined effect of irrigation time and volume significantly influenced seed yield, but the quality of amaranth seeds was preserved, with no significant differences due to simple or combined stresses found during the three-year field experiment.

Reactive Oxygen Species Partly Mediate DNA Methylation in Responses to Different Heavy Metals in Pokeweed

Minyu Jing et al.

Summary: DNA methylation is an important response strategy in plants under heavy metal stress. This study focused on the role of DNA methylation in plant adaptation to manganese and cadmium stress using pokeweed as a model. The results showed that different metals caused different response patterns in pokeweed, including subcellular distributions, ROS scavenging systems, transcriptional patterns, and DNA methylation. The number of differentially methylated loci increased with higher metal concentrations. Inhibition of NADPH oxidase reduced ROS levels and the expression of DNA methylase and demethylase. Furthermore, the study found that ROS played a role in mediating the changes in DNA methylation induced by manganese and cadmium stress.

DNA Methylation in Plant Responses and Adaption to Abiotic Stresses

Minghui Sun et al.

Summary: Plants, being sessile, have developed various strategies to adapt and regulate abiotic stresses. DNA methylation, an epigenetic regulation system, has been extensively studied in its role in regulating genome functioning and inducing plant resistance and adaptation to abiotic stresses. This review provides an updated account on the role of DNA methylation in plant responses and adaptations to drought, high temperature, cold, salt, and heavy metal stresses, as well as discussing stress memory regulated by DNA methylation.

Phytoremediation of heavy metals contaminated soil samples obtained from mechanic workshop and dumpsite using Amaranthus spinosus

Kelechi L. Njoku et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of Amaranthus spinosus for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils in a mechanic workshop and refuse dumpsites. The results showed that the growth of A. spinosus contributed to an enhanced loss of heavy metals from the soils, with greater losses observed in the refuse dumpsite. A. spinosus showed hyperaccumulation characteristics for Zn and Cu, indicating its ability for metal remediation. However, caution should be exercised as the metals were translocated to the aerial parts of the plant.

Genome-wide identification and analysis of DNA methyltransferase and demethylase gene families in Dendrobium officinale reveal their potential functions in polysaccharide accumulation

Zhenming Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a genome-wide analysis of DoC5-MTase and DodMTase gene families in Dendrobium officinale was conducted, revealing multiple subfamilies and cis-acting elements in the promoter regions. Expression profile analysis in different tissues showed that most DoC5-MTases were downregulated by cold stress, while DodMTases were upregulated; at the seedling stage, DoC5-MTase expression decreased with growth, whereas DodMTase expression increased.

Dynamics of DNA Methylation and Its Functions in Plant Growth and Development

Suresh Kumar et al.

Summary: Epigenetic modifications in DNA bases and histone proteins play crucial roles in regulating gene expression and genome stability. The dynamics of DNA base methylation are mainly controlled by the activities of the writer/eraser, guided by ncRNA, and regulated by developmental/environmental cues. Recent advances in identifying ncRNA involved in de novo DNA methylation, DNA methylation proteins guiding DNA demethylase, and methylation monitoring sequences may help unravel some of the mysteries in epigenetic regulation.

Effects of cadmium stress on DNA methylation in soybean

Dan-Dan Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that cadmium stress altered genomic DNA methylation levels and patterns in soybean seedlings, with increasing cadmium concentration leading to dose-dependent increases in methylation levels and polymorphism rates. Differentially methylated fragments recovered from gels showed homology to genes associated with plant stress responses. This suggests that soybeans resist cadmium stress by increasing genomic DNA methylation levels and remethylation rates.
