Functional division of f-type and m-type thioredoxins to regulate the Calvin cycle and cyclic electron transport around photosystem I

Yuki Okegawa et al.

Summary: Redox regulation of chloroplast proteins is crucial for photosynthesis, with the thioredoxin system playing a central role. Lack of either Trx f or Trx m delays the reduction of Calvin cycle enzymes, while lack of both Trxs further delays the initiation of photosynthesis. Trx f is necessary for the rapid activation of the Calvin cycle, while Trx m regulates the PGR5-dependent cyclic electron transport.

Exploring the Diversity of the Thioredoxin Systems in Cyanobacteria

Manuel J. Mallen-Ponce et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the evolutionary diversity of Trx systems in cyanobacteria and their phylogenetic relationships, as well as the physiological relevance of redox regulation in cyanobacteria. The results reveal variations in Trx systems among different cyanobacteria and gradual loss of certain proteins with cyanobacterial diversification.

The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway Contributes to Glycogen Breakdown During High to Low CO2 Shifts in the Cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

Stefan Lucius et al.

Summary: Mutants with defects in the glycolytic Entner-Doudoroff (ED) pathway accumulated high levels of glycogen under high CO2 conditions, which were slowly consumed after shifting to low CO2 conditions. This mutation led to a decreased ability to respond to inorganic carbon shifts, hindered growth reactivation in high CO2 conditions, and altered metabolite composition, particularly increasing levels of proline. Deleting eda may promote the utilization of the oxidative pentose-phosphate (OPP) shunt and enhance NADPH levels, suggesting a major regulatory contribution of the ED pathway in mobilizing glycogen reserves during rapid acclimation to fluctuating CO2 conditions.

Depletion of m-type thioredoxin impairs photosynthesis, carbon fixation, and oxidative stress in cyanobacteria

Manuel J. Mallen-Ponce et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the regulatory role of thioredoxins is conserved in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, and depletion of TrxA greatly interferes with the cellular redox state, affecting essential biological processes.
