Monitoring of porcine circovirus type 2 infection through air and surface samples in vaccinated and unvaccinated fattening farms

Gonzalo Lopez-Lorenzo et al.

Summary: Air and surface samples are useful tools for monitoring PCV2 infection, even detecting the virus before pigs develop viremia. There is a good correlation between PCV2 load in air and surface samples and viremia of pig population.

Molecular Epidemic Characteristics and Genetic Evolution of Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2) in Swine Herds of Shanghai, China

Le Kang et al.

Summary: Porcine Circovirus 2 (PCV2) is a crucial pathogen in swine and causes porcine circovirus-associated diseases (PCVADs), which pose a serious economic threat to the global swine industry. Multiple PCV2 genotypes, with PCV2d being the most dominant, were found in commercial pig farms in Shanghai. Critical amino acid substitutions were observed in epitope regions of important capsid proteins, affecting viral replication and host immune response. Co-infection of PCV2 with other lethal swine viral diseases, such as PPV and PPRSV, was also investigated.

Summary: PCV2 infection is increasing in China, with a positive rate of 53% in clinical samples. PCV2d is the predominant genotype, while commercial vaccines are mainly based on PCV2a. Evaluation of PCV2b and PCV2d Cap proteins shows promising homologous and heterologous protection capabilities.
