Respiration-induced biofilm formation as a driver for bacterial niche colonization

Alberto J. Martin-Rodriguez

Summary: Bacteria can perform diverse redox processes for energy acquisition depending on their physiology and metabolism. Respiration, using oxygen or alternative electron acceptors, is energetically favorable and has been shown to induce biofilm formation or dispersal. Recent evidence suggests that the strain specificity of this phenomenon, even within strains sharing the same respiratory pathways, implies subtle regulatory mechanisms.

Comparison of Two Distinct Subpopulations of Klebsiella pneumoniae ST16 Co-Occurring in a Single Patient

Biying Zhang et al.

Summary: As a leading pathogen causing health care-acquired infections, Klebsiella pneumoniae poses a threat to a large number of inpatients due to its antibiotic resistance and virulence factors. This study investigates the diversity of K. pneumoniae ST16 and the potential evolution of plasmids by analyzing whole-genome sequencing data. The findings provide valuable insights into the occurrence and development of bacterial resistance.

Metabonomics reveals an alleviation of fitness cost in resistant E. coli competing against susceptible E. coli at sub-MIC doxycycline

Xin Wen et al.

Summary: Our study found that a low proportion of resistant bacteria coexisted with susceptible bacteria due to fitness costs in the absence of doxycycline. However, the fitness cost for resistant bacteria decreased at 1 mg/L doxycycline and disappeared at 2 mg/L. Metabonomics analysis revealed that bypass carbon metabolism and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites were the primary metabolic pathways enriching various upregulated metabolites in resistant bacteria without doxycycline.

Meropenem/vaborbactam activity in vitro: a new option for Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae treatment

Federica Romanelli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of meropenem/vaborbactam versus ceftazidime/avibactam on carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infections. The results suggest that meropenem/vaborbactam could be a significant advancement in the treatment of KPC-producing K. pneumoniae infections, especially in light of ceftazidime/avibactam resistance.

Conjugation dynamics depend on both the plasmid acquisition cost and the fitness cost

Hannah Prensky et al.

Summary: The process of plasmid acquisition during conjugation results in immediate but transient metabolic perturbation. This study found that newly acquired transconjugants exhibit slower growth and prolonged lag times compared to cells that have been replicating for several generations, indicating the presence of a plasmid acquisition cost. The short-term effects of plasmid acquisition have been shown to play a critical role in both short- and long-term plasmid prevalence, particularly in microbiomes with high plasmid/strain diversity.
