Database resources of the National Center for Biotechnology Information

Eric W. Sayers et al.

Summary: The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) offers a wide range of online resources for biological information and data, including GenBank (R) nucleic acid sequence database and PubMed (R) database of citations and abstracts. Entrez system allows search and retrieval operations for most of these data, with E-utilities serving as the programming interface. Additional resources such as PMC, Bookshelf, Genome Data Viewer, SRA, ClinVar, dbSNP, dbVar, Pathogen Detection, BLAST, Primer-BLAST, IgBLAST, iCn3D, and PubChem are also accessible through the NCBI home page.

The Majority of Typhoid Toxin-Positive Salmonella Serovars Encode ArtB, an Alternate Binding Subunit

A. Gaballa et al.

Summary: Salmonella enterica encodes a variety of virulence factors, including the novel toxin typhoid toxin (TT). Genes encoding TT are found in more than 100 serovars of S. enterica subsp. enterica, with clade B and section Typhi more likely to encode TT genes. Furthermore, the cooccurrence of both toxin binding subunits ArtB and PltB is more common than previously thought, suggesting a competitive inclusion in the holotoxin.

Characterization of Basal Transcriptomes Identifies Potential Metabolic and Virulence-Associated Adaptations Among Diverse Nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica Serovars

Alexa R. Cohn et al.

Summary: Through transcriptomic comparisons using RNA-seq, this study revealed differences in gene transcription abundance and expression levels of pathogenic islands among NTS serovars, highlighting potential transcriptional mechanisms that facilitate the survival and adaptation of S. Cerro and S. Javiana in their respective hosts, impacting their disease-causing abilities in others. The study also demonstrated the utility of omics approaches in understanding the diversity of metabolic and virulence mechanisms among different NTS serovars.
