Review of 2022 WHO guidelines on the control and elimination of schistosomiasis

Nathan C. Lo et al.

Summary: Schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease infecting approximately 250 million people worldwide, has been controlled through preventive chemotherapy programs. However, the recent increase in scientific evidence and the global supply of praziquantel has resulted in the need to update public health guidance. In 2022, the WHO published new guidelines that expand preventive chemotherapy eligibility, lower the prevalence threshold for treatment, and increase the frequency of treatment.

Larval trematodes hosted by Biomphalaria straminea in the Brazilian semiarid region: implications for schistosomiasis control

D. G. S. Sousa et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to identify larval trematodes shed by snails found in water bodies used by urban communities in a former schistosomiasis endemic area in the state of Piaui, in the Brazilian semiarid region. The study found different types of trematode larvae shed by snails in the water bodies, but the accurate diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni circulation in former endemic areas is still necessary.

Performance of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for detection of Schistosoma mansoni infection compared with Kato-Katz and real-time PCR

A. F. Allam et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) with Kato-Katz and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detecting Schistosoma mansoni DNA. The results showed that real-time PCR had the highest infection rate, while LAMP had the lowest infection rate in urine samples. LAMP has great potential for diagnosing moderate and high-intensity infection in endemic areas, but further optimization is needed, especially in urine samples.

Evaluation of a real-time recombinase polymerase amplification assay for rapid detection of Schistosoma haematobium infection in resource-limited setting

Michael Frimpong et al.

Summary: Accurate diagnosis of urogenital schistosomiasis is crucial for surveillance and control programs towards WHO's goal of eradicating schistosomiasis by 2020. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) has emerged as a rapid and simple molecular tool with diagnostic accuracy similar to PCR, making it suitable for low resource settings. The real-time RPA assay targeting the Dra 1 repetitive sequence of S. haematobium showed high clinical sensitivity and specificity, making it a potential alternative to PCR in diagnosing urogenital schistosomiasis.

Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification in Schistosomiasis

Juan Garcia-Bernalt Diego et al.

Summary: Human schistosomiasis is a major parasitic disease with limited diagnostic tools, such as PCR, due to high costs and requirements for trained personnel. Alternative isothermal techniques like LAMP have emerged as more affordable options, but have not yet significantly altered routine diagnosis of schistosomiasis. Further research and application are needed to fully assess the potential of LAMP technology in this field.

Summary: A study evaluated the performance of POC-CCA in an infection-free area and found that it is not recommended as a cut-off point for mass drug administration or a reliable diagnostic tool for infection carriers in low endemic areas.
