Microbiome-related aspects of locust density-dependent phase transition

Omer Lavy et al.

Summary: This study compared the bacterial composition of locusts before and after a phase transition and found that the microbiome undergoes changes during the transition, including the acquisition of Weissella. The study also demonstrated the potential evolutionary advantage of aggregation-inducing microbes under different conditions using a mathematical model.

Insect gut bacteria: a promising tool for enhanced biogas production

Binoy Kumar Show et al.

Summary: The utilization of unexplored lignocellulolytic microbial resources, specifically from herbivorous insect gut systems, shows promising potential for enhanced biogas production. While only a few insect orders have been studied so far, the gut bacteria within them have shown significant lignocellulolytic capabilities, making them a sustainable bioresource technology for utilizing waste-plant biomasses.

Analysis of Intestinal Microbial Diversity of Four Species of Grasshoppers and Determination of Cellulose Digestibility

Jing Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diversity of symbiotic bacteria in the intestinal tract of four grasshopper species and analyzed the relationship between intestinal microbial diversity and the digestibility of cellulose and hemicellulose. The results showed that gut microbes were correlated with the digestibility of cellulose and hemicellulose, suggesting the potential of grasshoppers to develop into bioreactors for improving straw utilization efficiency.

Gut bacterial communities across 12 Ensifera (Orthoptera) at different feeding habits and its prediction for the insect with contrasting feeding habits

Xiang Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, the composition and diversity of gut microbiota in 12 Ensifera from 6 provinces of China were compared, showing significant influences of feeding habits and taxonomic status on the gut bacterial community. The study revealed Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Cyanobacteria as the predominant phyla in Ensifera, with differences in gut bacteria diversity based on feeding habits and unique biomarkers associated with dietary characteristics. The bacterial community structure of Ensifera samples was found to be significantly different from that of Caelifera, indicating that feeding habits and taxonomic status jointly affect the gut bacterial community composition in Orthoptera samples.

The Succession of the Gut Microbiota in Insects: A Dynamic Alteration of the Gut Microbiota During the Whole Life Cycle of Honey Bees (Apis cerana)

Zhi-Xiang Dong et al.

Summary: The Asian honey bee Apis cerana is an important insect in the ecological environment and agricultural economy. The composition of gut microbiota has a significant impact on the insect's health and development. This study used high-throughput sequencing to analyze the gut microbiota of A. cerana at different developmental stages, revealing significant variations and changes in dominant constituents. Environmental exposure in early developmental stages was found to have the greatest impact on the gut microbiota.

Evaluation of cellulose degrading bacteria isolated from the gut-system of cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera and their potential values in biomass conversion

Mudasir A. Dar et al.

Summary: This study isolated cellulose-degrading bacteria from different gut sections of cotton bollworm and demonstrated their ability to participate in cellulose digestion. The bacteria affiliated to Firmicutes and Proteobacteria phyla were found to dominate the gut sections, primarily secreting endoglucanase and xylanase enzymes. Wheat husk and sugarcane bagasse were identified as the most favorable substrates for xylanase and endoglucanase productions, suggesting the potential of these symbiotic bacteria in biomass conversion for the biofuel industry.

Qing Zhang et al.

Summary: An efficient ligninolytic strain Enterobacter hormaechei KA3 was isolated from the gut microbiomes of lignin-feeding insects, showing better lignin-degrading ability for corn straw and significantly improved methane yield in anaerobic digestion. This study provides a new microbial resource for lignin degradation with practical applications.

Unlocking the potential of insect and ruminant host symbionts for recycling of lignocellulosic carbon with a biorefinery approach: a review

Gunasekaran Rajeswari et al.

Summary: The depletion of fossil fuels and deterioration of ecological reserves have driven the search for alternative renewable and sustainable energy sources. While first generation biorefinery has been successful in producing biofuels globally, the debate over food versus fuel has led to the exploration of non-edible feedstocks for second generation biofuel production. Research efforts have focused on microbial communities in insects and ruminants to find potential candidates for lignocellulosic biomass degradation, aiming to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of biofuel production.

Host Phylogeny and Diet Shape Gut Microbial Communities Within Bamboo-Feeding Insects

Kuanguan Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, gut microbiota of bamboo-feeding insects were examined to understand their convergent adaptation to extreme diet specialization. Results showed that while both phylogeny and diet can influence the gut microbiome composition, phylogeny primarily drives the convergent adaptation to a highly specialized diet in insects feeding on bamboo.

Antibiotics increased host insecticide susceptibility via collapsed bacterial symbionts reducing detoxification metabolism in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens

Tao Tang et al.

Summary: The study showed that bacterial symbionts may impact insecticide metabolism by regulating the expression of the insect host's GST and P450 genes, influencing the pest's resistance to insecticides. These findings provide a foundation for further research on the mechanism of symbiont-mediated host detoxification metabolism in insect pests.
