Defective icGCs in mice lead to increased sensitivity to chemically induced colitis and spontaneous colitis with age, while alterations in mucus and reduced numbers of icGCs are observed in patients with ulcerative colitis, highlighting the importance of icGCs in maintaining functional epithelial protection.
