Microbiological, Clinical, and PK/PD Features of the New Anti-Gram-Negative Antibiotics: β-Lactam/β-Lactamase Inhibitors in Combination and Cefiderocol-An All-Inclusive Guide for Clinicians

Luigi Principe et al.

Summary: Bacterial resistance mechanisms are continuously and rapidly evolving, especially for Gram-negative bacteria. The strategy of developing new beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors (BLs/BLIs) combinations has been successful, and data on several compounds are becoming available. Cefiderocol, with its unique mechanism of action, warrants separate discussion.

Epidemiology, Drug Resistance, and Risk Factors for Mortality Among Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Recipients with Hospital-Acquired Klebsiella pneumoniae Infections: A Single-Center Retrospective Study from China

Yan-Feng Liu et al.

Summary: K. pneumoniae infection has become a serious threat for HSCT recipients, and the study identified several risk factors for mortality, including interval from diagnosis to transplantation, engraftment period, non-use of anti-CMV immunoglobulin/rituximab after transplantation, and PCT level. These findings provide useful evidence for guiding antibiotic use and improving prognosis in HSCT recipients.

Changing Epidemiology and Decreased Mortality Associated With Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative Bacteria, 2000-2017

Ahmed Babiker et al.

Summary: Carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria (CRGNB) have shown emerging trends over nearly 2 decades, causing high mortality rates among patients. Despite increasing rates of CRGNB, overall patient outcomes have improved, likely due to increased recognition and the emergence of novel therapeutics.

Incidence and risk factors of hepatic veno-occlusive disease/sinusoidal obstruction syndrome after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation in adults with prophylactic ursodiol and intravenous heparin or prostaglandin E1

Jae-Ho Yoon et al.

Summary: This study identified the incidence and survival outcome of hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/veno-occlusive disease (VOD/SOS) after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) under a strategy of prophylactic ursodiol and intravenous heparin or prostaglandin E1. The overall incidence of hepatic VOD/SOS was 3.4% after allogeneic-HCT, with varying survival rates based on severity grades. Factors affecting development of VOD/SOS included disease risk index, gender, donor type, and busulfex dosage. Allogeneic-HCT using ursodiol and intravenous prophylaxis was considered safe, but early intervention for high-risk VOD/SOS patients is crucial.

Imipenem/Cilastatin/Relebactam: A Review in Gram-Negative Bacterial Infections

Young-A. Heo

Summary: Imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam is an effective option for treating gram-negative infections in adults, showing noninferiority to piperacillin/tazobactam in HABP/VABP patients and efficacy against imipenem-nonsusceptible infections. It is generally well tolerated and has potential as a therapy for infections caused by carbapenem-resistant pathogens.

Treatment outcome and adverse effects of colistin in adult patients with carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteremia from Pakistan

Zaheer Udin Babar et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of colistin in patients with carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteremia in Pakistan. The study found that colistin had a good bacteriological clearance rate in patients, but some patients experienced reversible neurological adverse effects.

Epidemiology, Susceptibility, and Risk Factors Associated with Mortality in Carbapenem-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacterial Infections Among Abdominal Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Di Wu et al.

Summary: Carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria infections are common and deadly among abdominal solid organ transplantation recipients, with Acinetobacter baumannii being the most common pathogen. Drug resistance rates are high, especially to certain categories, such as tigecycline, which is showing an increasing trend over time. Mechanical ventilation, septic shock, and low platelet count are identified as independent risk factors for mortality. Vigilant management is recommended when using tigecycline due to the escalating risk of drug resistance.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of C/A and C/T in haematological patients with febrile neutropenia undergoing high-dose chemotherapy and HSCT. Monitoring multidrug-resistant GNB colonization helped improve outcomes in a high-risk population, although GNB PE-BSIs remained a challenge.

Prevention and management of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in haematopoietic cell transplantation

Dangudubiyyam Sri Krishna Sahitya et al.

Summary: This review discusses the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infections, with a particular emphasis on patients undergoing haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Preventive strategies, newer diagnostic tests, available antimicrobial agents, and experimental treatments against CRE are reviewed, aiming to provide recommendations for the diagnosis and management of CRE infections in the blood and marrow transplant (BMT) unit.

Tandem fecal microbiota transplantation cycles in an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipient targeting carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae colonization: a case report and literature review

Fengqin Su et al.

Summary: Limited antibiotic options contribute to high non-relapse mortality in allo-HSCT patients with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infections. Intestinal CRE colonization is a risk factor for subsequent CRE infection. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has shown success in decolonizing multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) and may be a potential option for CRE decolonization, as seen in this case report.
