High Specificity of Single Inertial Sensor-Supplemented Timed Up and Go Test for Assessing Fall Risk in Elderly Nursing Home Residents

Frederic Dierick et al.

Summary: The study aimed to improve the predictive accuracy of fall risk in the elderly by adding a single wearable IMU to the Timed Up and Go test (TUG). Data analysis showed that several kinematic variables and residents' characteristics were relevant for distinguishing fallers from non-fallers. The newly proposed test i + TUG achieved a predictive accuracy of 74.0%, with high specificity and low sensitivity. This method is quick, easy to perform and inexpensive, and it is recommended to be integrated into daily clinical practice in nursing homes.

Risk-of-falling related outcomes improved in community-dwelling older adults after a 6-week sideways walking intervention: a feasibility and pilot study

Andreas Skiadopoulos et al.

Summary: This pilot study confirmed the feasibility of sideways walking as an exercise intervention to improve risk-of-falling outcomes in community-dwelling older adults. Most potential participants were initially reluctant to commit to a 6-week intervention, but the desired recruitment rate was achieved after revising the recruitment strategy. Remaining participants demonstrated good adherence to the protocol and showed improvement on most outcomes, with effects sustained at follow-up.
