Pathogenesis of sarcopenia and the relationship with fat mass: descriptive review

Chun-wei Li et al.

Summary: Age-associated obesity and muscle atrophy are closely linked and regulated by adipose tissue and skeletal muscle dysfunction. Adipose inflammation leads to fat redistribution and fatty infiltrations in muscles, causing decreased strength and functionality. Lipid accumulation induces mitochondrial dysfunction, increased production of reactive oxygen species, leading to lipotoxicity and insulin resistance. Muscle-secreted cytokines may exacerbate adipose tissue atrophy and chronic inflammation, establishing a vicious cycle of local hyperlipidaemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation, promoting the development of sarcopenic obesity.

Sarcopenic Dysphagia, Malnutrition, and Oral Frailty in Elderly: A Comprehensive Review

Alessandro de Sire et al.

Summary: Frailty is a common condition in the elderly and is closely associated with a higher risk of fragility fractures, hospitalization, and mortality. Sarcopenia and dysphagia are common pathological conditions in frail older people and often coexist, leading to dehydration and malnutrition. Poor oral health is also closely related to the aging process and can affect the immune system, wound healing, and the ability to maintain proper oral hygiene in older people. Therefore, poor oral health can lead to malnutrition and frailty.

Central obesity is associated with lower prevalence of sarcopenia in older women, but not in men: a cross-sectional study

Seongmin Choi et al.

Summary: Obesity may have protective effects on low appendicular skeletal muscle mass index and sarcopenia in older adults, according to the AWGS criteria. Central obesity was associated with a lower prevalence of sarcopenia in women. However, obesity did not have a positive impact on functional parameters of sarcopenia such as muscle strength and physical performance.

Lipid metabolism in sarcopenia

Ahmed Al Saedi et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is an age-related disease that leads to loss of muscle mass and strength. Fat infiltration in muscle is one of its hallmark features. Changes in fatty acid metabolism are evident in aging, type 2 diabetes, and obesity and play a significant role in muscle insulin resistance and lipid accumulation.

Sarcopenia Diagnosis: Reliability of the Ultrasound Assessment of the Tibialis Anterior Muscle as an Alternative Evaluation Tool

Massimiliano Leigheb et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the reliability of ultrasound assessment of tibialis anterior muscle in diagnosing sarcopenia. The study found a significant correlation between reduced tibialis anterior muscle thickness and SarQoL values, hand grip strength, and skeletal muscle index. Ultrasound assessment of tibialis anterior muscle may be considered a reliable tool for evaluating sarcopenia.
