Tropical Cyclone Intensity Estimation Using Himawari-8 Satellite Cloud Products and Deep Learning

Jinkai Tan et al.

Summary: This study develops an objective deep-learning-based model for estimating tropical cyclone (TC) intensity. The model utilizes a convolutional neural network (CNN) structure and incorporates residual learning and attention mechanisms to enhance feature extraction. Training inputs are obtained from five cloud products provided by the Himawari-8 geostationary satellite. The model is trained using sampled cloud products from various TC rotation angles. The independent test data demonstrates improved performance, with a low root mean square error (RMSE) of 4.06 m/s and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.23 m/s, comparable to previous studies. The model training process is interpreted through feature maps showing cloud organization patterns, storm whirling patterns, and TC structures. Analysis of overestimated and underestimated biases reveals the impact of initial cloud products on the model's performance. Moreover, controlled experiments using different deep learning architectures confirm the effectiveness of this model in estimating TC intensity and providing insights for forecasting other TC metrics.

A neural network framework for fine-grained tropical cyclone intensity prediction

Zhe Zhang et al.

Summary: Tropical cyclones (TCs) cause significant losses of life and economy. Accurate TC intensity prediction is challenging due to the chaotic nature of TCs. Deep learning methods have been used to model the spatial and temporal characteristics of TCs, but current studies in this area still lack sufficient spatio-temporal feature modeling and prediction granularity. In this study, a neural network framework called TC-Pred is proposed, which includes a novel feature extraction and aggregation approach, a sequence-to-sequence architecture for fine-grained predictions, and a convolutional transformer module to address long-term dependency decay. Extensive experiments show that the TC-Pred models achieve better performance, with the TC-Pred(ConvGRU) model obtaining significant improvements compared to baselines at different time intervals.
