Study on the mechanism of biochar loaded typical microalgae Chlorella removal of cadmium

Xiyan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study explores the possibility of using coconut shell activated carbon (Csac) and microalgae (Chlorella) to remove cadmium (Cd) from contaminated water. The results show that Chlorella can adhere to the micropores of Csac, forming a composite adsorbent with enhanced Cd adsorption capacity. Various analysis techniques reveal the presence of abundant functional groups on the surface of the composite adsorbent, which serve as active sites during the adsorption process.

Adsorption of sulfamethoxazole via biochar: The key role of characteristic components derived from different growth stage of microalgae

Xuefei Tan et al.

Summary: Converting microalgal biomass into biochar is a popular approach for treating organic pollutants. This study investigates the relationship between adsorption efficiency and microalgal composition. The results show that microalgal biochar collected during the mid-log phase of growth exhibits the best adsorption capacity. This is attributed to the higher decomposition of microalgal cellular proteins and the presence of larger surface area, pore volume, and functional groups.
