Label-Free Sensing with Metal Nanostructure-Based Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Cancer Diagnosis

Summary: Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical technique with great potential for medical diagnostic applications. It offers noninvasive and rapid detection for cancer diagnosis, screening, staging, and treatment monitoring. This review summarizes the progress in label-free SERS-based chemical detection for cancer diagnosis, focusing on the design and preparation of SERS substrates using metal nanoparticle structures. The review also discusses the use of biofluids and breath as detection media for cancer diagnosis with SERS.

Auto-CSC: A Transfer Learning Based Automatic Cell Segmentation and Count Framework

Summary: Cell segmentation and counting are crucial in the medical field, and convolution neural networks have shown promising results in this area. However, the traditional data-driven approach requires a large number of annotations and can be time-consuming and prone to human error. This paper proposes a novel method that eliminates the need for extensive manual annotations by generating cell image labels using traditional algorithms. The proposed method achieves comparable segmentation and count performance to models trained with a large amount of annotated mixed cell images.

The field of liquid biopsy has grown tremendously due to its non-invasive nature in obtaining and studying tumor material. However, standard technologies for biomarker analysis are limited in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, multiplexing, high-throughput, and speed, while surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is seen as a technology that can overcome these limitations.

Automated Cell Mechanical Characterization by On-Chip Sequential Squeezing: From Static to Dynamic

Summary: This study proposed a new method for characterizing cell mechanical properties by analyzing the dynamic behavior of cells as they pass through multiple constrictions. Experimental results showed a decrease in passage time and an increase in dynamic deformability as cells passed through multiple constrictions. The deformability increase rate of HeLa cells was eight times higher than that of MEF cells, and the weak correlation between the deformability increase rate and cell size suggests that this new method has the potential for cancer cell recognition.
