Voltammetric Behaviour of LMO at the Nanoscale: A Map of Reversibility and Diffusional Limitations

Edgardo M. Gavilan-Arriazu et al.

Summary: Recent experimental research has addressed the electrochemical Li-ion intercalation in individual nanosized particles, providing a transparent 2-dimensional zone diagram representation for rapid diagnosis of system reversibility and diffusion length. The model framework elucidates the heterogeneous behavior of nanosized particles with similar sizes but different shapes, presenting an outlook for realistic multiscale modeling of real materials.

Fast charging of alkali-ion batteries at the single-particle level: the impact of particle geometry on diffusional and kinetic bottlenecks in voltammetry

E. M. Gavilan-Arriazu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the microscopic level investigation of charge transfer at the interface and diffusion of ions inside the electrodes, which limit the fast charging of alkali-ion battery cells. The results, presented as maps of reversibility and finiteness of diffusion, provide a physical interpretation of the phenomena and contribute to the rational design of fast-charging electrode materials.

Heterogeneity between and within Single Hematite Nanorods as Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Mingyang Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the structural nature of active sites in electrocatalysis is crucial for designing better catalysts in fuel cells and electrolyzers. Conventional measurements often fail to reveal the location and structure of active sites within nanostructures, but a single-entity electrochemical approach using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) can overcome this limitation and reveal the heterogeneity in electrocatalysts.

Correlating Electrochemical Kinetic Parameters of Single LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 Particles with the Performance of Corresponding Porous Electrodes

Xu Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a single-particle electrochemical setup was established and a model was developed to analyze the impact of the solid-phase diffusion coefficient and exchange current density on electrode performance. It was found that the carbon coating enhances the exchange current density. The solid-phase diffusion coefficient and exchange current density irreversibly decrease by approximately 25% and 10%, respectively, when the cutoff charge voltage increases. Furthermore, a correlation was observed between the exchange current density of active particles and the capacity and capacity fade of porous electrodes.

Unraveling the Structural Sensitivity of CO2 Electroreduction at Facet-Defined Nanocrystals via Correlative Single-Entity and Macroelectrode Measurements

Soojin Jeong et al.

Summary: The conversion of CO2 into value-added products is important for storing energy from intermittent renewable sources. This study investigates the electrocatalytic response of individual gold nanocrystals with different facet definitions for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). It finds that {110}-terminated gold rhombohedra show superior activity and selectivity compared to {111}-terminated octahedra and high-index {310}-terminated truncated ditetragonal prisms.

Clarification of particle size dependence on the rate capabilities of Li[Ni1/2Mn3/2]O4 materials and electrodes by the dilute electrode method

Kingo Ariyoshi et al.

Summary: The research found that particle size plays a significant role in the rate capability of LiNiMO electrodes, with nanosized particles improving the rate capability of dilute LiNiMO electrodes and micron-sized particles enhancing the rate capability of conventional LiNiMO electrodes. This indicates different rate-determining steps for the two types of electrodes, with Li-ion transport in LiNiMO particles being faster for dilute electrodes and Li-ion diffusion in the electrolyte being faster for conventional electrodes. Ultimately, the study suggests that designing electrodes with nanosized particles can lead to superior rate capabilities.
