Degradation of contaminants in plasma technology: An overview

Raynard Christianson Sanito et al.

Summary: The review article compiles information on plasma technologies applications for environmental clean-up, including treating and degrading metals, dyes, biomass, antibiotics, pesticides, VOCs, bacteria, virus, and fungi. Different reactor configurations of plasma technology are explored in the generation of reactive species for pollutants removal, hydrogen and methane production, and microorganism inactivation. The potential of applying plasma technology for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) inactivation is also discussed in the review paper, along with detailed information on plasma parameter configuration to support the removal of contaminants.

Low-carbon footprint chemical manufacturing using plasma technology

Evangelos Delikonstantis et al.

Summary: Plasma processing can drive low-carbon chemical manufacturing using renewable electricity and has already been used in various production sectors. It has the potential to outperform thermo(catalytic) processes at mild conditions and low CO2 emissions. However, there are scientific and technical challenges that need to be overcome for widespread industrial implementation of plasma technology.

Sustainability analysis of methane-to-hydrogen-to-ammonia conversion by integration of high-temperature plasma and non-thermal plasma processes

Jose Osorio-Tejada et al.

Summary: This study introduces a thermally integrated process for H-2 production and NH3 synthesis using plasma technology, which shows potential to reduce carbon emissions and costs based on life cycle assessment. It can be competitive with traditional small-scale Haber-Bosch NH3 synthesis and has environmental benefits when supplied by renewable energy sources.

Efficient alkane oxidation under combustion engine and atmospheric conditions

Zhandong Wang et al.

Summary: Conventional wisdom suggested that only organic compounds with double bonds or oxygen-containing moieties could efficiently undergo autoxidation, but recent research has shown significant autoxidation of alkanes under both atmospheric and combustion conditions. The study demonstrates that even at high concentrations of NOX, C-6-C-10 alkanes can produce considerable amounts of highly oxygenated products that contribute to urban organic aerosol, challenging previous beliefs about the susceptibility of alkanes to extensive autoxidation.

An assessment of electrified methanol production from an environmental perspective

Evangelos Delikonstantis et al.

Summary: The study indicates that novel electrified processes for methanol production, such as plasma-assisted and electrically heated thermocatalytic dry methane reforming based processes, have lower greenhouse gas emissions and greater CO2 reduction potential when powered by renewable energy sources. The use of renewable electricity results in lower climate change impacts, with both plasma-assisted and thermocatalytic technologies showing promising results for CO2 abatement.
