Thermo-chemical transition in cellulose esters and other polymers

Costas Tsioptsias et al.

Summary: The peculiar thermochemical phenomenon called glass chemical transition is observed in cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), as well as in cellulose acetate (CA) and other mixed esters. The intense endotherm below 100 degrees C in cellulose esters is mainly attributed to esterification. The stability of the acetyl bond in CAB and CA is analyzed, showing that thermo-chemical transitions are not exclusive to cellulose esters, but are instead a common phenomenon encompassing physicochemical changes and material softening.

Waterproof-breathable films from multi-branched fluorinated cellulose esters

Giacomo Tedeschi et al.

Summary: Cellulose ester films were prepared by esterifying cellulose with multibranched fluorinated carboxylic acid at different molar ratios. The films showed varying morphological and optical properties, as well as different degrees of substitution (DS) and mechanical behaviors. The presence of BRFA groups shifted the mechanical behavior from rigid to ductile and soft, and the films exhibited wettability similar to standard fluoropolymers.

Wet spinning to prepare filaments from three cellulose carbonated derivatives: Synthesis, characterization and filament properties

Xin Bao et al.

Summary: Three kinds of cellulose carbonated derivatives were synthesized by modifying cellulose with alkyl halides in DBU/DMSO/CO2 system, and their wet spinnability and filament properties were investigated. The solutions of various cellulose carbonated derivatives in Newtonian fluid state with viscosity over 0.07Pa.s showed good wet spinnability, producing filaments with smooth surface and uniform morphology, with cellulose propyl carbonated derivative filament exhibiting the highest mechanical properties and heat resistance. Wet spinning and key control conditions were combined to achieve the formation of filament with uniform morphology using the DBU/DMSO/CO2 system.
