Interface nanoengineering of a core-shell structured biobased fire retardant for fire-retarding polylactide with enhanced toughness and UV protection

Yueming Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, an effective method was found to adjust the polarity of fillers to improve their dispersion in a matrix. By coating polyethylenimine-decorated graphene oxide, the biobased core-shell graphene oxide hybrid achieved a more uniform distribution in the polylactide matrix and enhanced flame retardancy, impact toughness, and UV-shielding properties of the composite material.

A Si-containing polyphosphoramide via green chemistry for fire-retardant polylactide with well-preserved mechanical and transparent properties

Jiabing Feng et al.

Summary: This study reports a solvent-free and green approach for synthesizing a silicon-containing polyphosphoramide (DM-Si) for producing flame-retardant polylactide (PLA) materials. The results show that the addition of DM-Si significantly enhances the fire retardancy and toughness of PLA without affecting its transparency and tensile strength. This method provides a green and simple strategy for the development of sustainable materials with balanced mechanical strength and transparency.

Preparation and mechanism study of a high efficiency bio-based flame retardant for simultaneously enhancing flame retardancy, toughness and crystallization rate of poly (lactic acid)

Yue Xu et al.

Summary: Polylactic acid (PLA) is considered one of the most promising sustainable bioplastics to address global energy crisis and white pollution. However, the high flammability, poor crystallinity, and brittleness of PLA composites restrict their application in emerging fields. This research introduces a novel bio-based additive, chitosan methyl phosphonate (CMP), which enhances the fire safety, toughness, and crystallization rate of PLA composites. The addition of 4 wt% CMP achieves the UL-94 V-0 rating and high LOI, meeting the strict flame retardant requirements. This study presents a new strategy to prepare high-performance and multi-functional PLA bio-based composites.

Chitosan/sodium polyborate based micro-nano coating with high flame retardancy and superhydrophobicity for cotton fabric

Peng Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, a sustainable flame retardant and superhydrophobic cotton fabric was prepared using chitosan and sodium polyborate treatment, followed by PDMS treatment. The fabric demonstrated enhanced flame retardancy and superhydrophobic properties, as well as anti-sticking, self-cleaning, and oil/water-separating capabilities. This coating method, free from F, Cl, Br, and P elements, is considered a clean approach for producing functional cotton fabrics.

Fabrication of highly efficient phenylphosphorylated chitosan bio-based flame retardants for flammable PLA biomaterial

Xiaobing Ma et al.

Summary: Modified chitosan-based flame retardants, such as phenylphosphorylated CS (PhPCS) and phenylphosphoramidated CS (PhPNCS), show promising prospects due to their sustainability, biodegradability, and good charring properties. These bio-based flame retardants exhibited excellent flame retardancy efficiency for poly(lactic acid) (PLA), but the mechanical properties of PhPCS-based biocomposites decreased with increasing content. On the other hand, PhPNCS-based biocomposites showed improved mechanical strengths due to the reactive compatibilization between the PhPNCS nanoparticles and PLA matrix.

Strengthening and flame retarding effect of bamboo fiber modified by silica aerogel on polylactic acid composites

Qianqian Niu et al.

Summary: This study successfully improved the mechanical and flame retardant properties of bamboo fiber-reinforced polylactic acid composites through fiber modification. The modified bamboo fiber enhanced the interface adhesion with polylactic acid, leading to increased tensile and impact strength. Compared to traditional bamboo fiber, the modified fiber also reduced the thermal conductivity of the composites and enhanced their flame retardancy.
