Reducing environmental plastic pollution by designing polymer materials for managed end-of-life

Kara Lavender Law et al.

Summary: Plastic debris continues to pollute the environment, and efforts must be made to reduce its environmental persistence through polymer selection and product design strategies. Plastics, composed mainly of polymers with carbon-carbon backbones, have led to a significant amount of waste accumulating in landfills and the environment. While plastic pollution in the ocean has been documented for years, there remains a lack of clarity on the composition, distribution, impact, and ultimate fate of plastic debris.

Bioplastics for a circular economy

Jan-Georg Rosenboom et al.

Summary: Bioplastics have the potential to contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy by reducing carbon footprint and offering advantageous material properties. However, they also face challenges such as negative agricultural impacts, competition with food production, unclear end-of-life management, and higher costs. Emerging chemical and biological methods can enable the upcycling of plastic waste into higher-quality materials. Standardization and guidelines are needed to guide purchasing choices, and clear regulations and financial incentives are essential for the large-scale adoption of bioplastics in a truly sustainable manner.

Enhanced dielectric properties of high glass transition temperature PDCPD/CNT composites by frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization

Ping Wang et al.

Summary: Frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization was used to prepare polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and PDCPD/CNT-NH2 composites with high glass transition temperature in situ. The composites exhibited high dielectric permittivity due to interfacial polarization between PDCPD and CNT-NH2, and nonconducting -NH2 groups preventing the conductive path of CNTs. The results showed that the glass transition temperature of the composites increased with the increase of filler, and the elongation at break of PDCPD/CNT-NH2 composites increased due to stronger interfacial affinity.
