Numerical assessment of riverbank filtration using gravel back filter to improve water quality in arid regions

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: The main challenge in water resource management, especially in developing countries, is finding non-traditional methods to obtain safe drinking water in sufficient quantities. In Egypt, the riverbank filtration system has shown great potential in improving the quality of river water. This study focuses on the drinking water plant in Embaba, Egypt and examines the impact of implementing a gravel-pack filter system through numerical simulations. The results indicate that increasing the filter width, thickness, and pipe numbers can improve the riverbank filtration sharing rate, while increasing the filter width at the groundwater side can reduce the thickness of the river bed. The design of the riverbank filtration system should take into account factors such as gravel-pack design, pipe filter geometry, and permeability.

Cost-effective management measures for coastal aquifers affected by saltwater intrusion and climate change

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: Sustainable management of natural water resources and food security is crucial for the livelihood of coastal communities in the face of changing climate conditions. This study introduces a new approach for mitigating saltwater intrusion through placing artificial aquifer materials along the shoreline, which can increase infiltration area, collect runoff, and reduce water treatment costs. The modeling results show that the proposed method can effectively decrease saltwater intrusion and increase fresh groundwater availability.

Effects of groundwater abstraction and desalination brine deep injection on a coastal aquifer

Ismail Abd-Elaty et al.

Summary: Due to climate change, population increase and improvement of living standards, the global attention on seawater desalination is growing. However, the brine produced during desalination process has detrimental effects on the environment, especially on coastal aquifers and marine ecosystems. By reducing the water concentration feeding the reverse osmosis plant, salinization of the coastal aquifer can be mitigated, leading to decreased energy consumption in the desalination process.
