Ozonation of organic compounds in water and wastewater: A critical review

Sungeun Lim et al.

Summary: Ozonation has a long history in water treatment and has been used for disinfection and oxidation of pollutants. In recent years, it has been increasingly applied for enhanced municipal wastewater treatment and water reuse. The research on ozonation has contributed to a better understanding of the removal efficiency of organic contaminants and the formation of transformation products.

Hydrogeochemical characteristics, sources and human health risk assessment of heavy metal dispersion in the mine pit water-surface water-groundwater system in the largest manganese mine in Ghana

Anthony Ewusi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the hydrogeochemical characteristics and sources of heavy metals in the mine pit water-surface water-groundwater system in the Nsuta manganese mining area in western Ghana. It also explores the potential human health risks associated with consuming water contaminated with heavy metals. The findings reveal that the water pH in the system ranges from slightly acidic to alkaline, and there is intense water-rock interaction and mineral dissolution. The concentrations of heavy metals are high in the water, posing toxicity risks. Therefore, measures should be taken to protect public health.

Environmental and Health Risks Posed by Heavy Metal Contamination of Groundwater in the Sunan Coal Mine, China

Lijuan Wang et al.

Summary: In the groundwater of the southern coal mining area in Suzhou, excessive concentrations of iron and manganese were found, indicating the need for attention. Chromium was identified as the major carcinogenic factor in the study area, contributing significantly to the overall health risk. Therefore, authorities must closely monitor the levels of iron, manganese, and chromium in this region.

Plant-based amyloids from food waste for removal of heavy metals from contaminated water

Wei Long Soon et al.

Summary: Water pollution caused by industrial and agricultural activities is a major global threat. Heavy metals, a type of water pollutants, can be effectively removed using plant amyloid-carbon membranes. This study successfully developed functional amyloid fibrils from sunflower and peanut meals and incorporated them into hybrid carbon/amyloid membranes for heavy metal removal.

Geochemical and Multivariate Statistical Evaluation of Trace Elements in Groundwater of Nigde Municipality, South-Central Turkey: Implications for Arsenic Contamination and Human Health Risks Assessment

Fehiman Cciner et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of trace elements in groundwater of the Nigde Municipality in Turkey, with a focus on arsenic contamination. The study found that arsenic contamination was dominant in the area, mainly sourced from geogenic processes. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed associations among different elements in groundwater, particularly the As-coordination group which showed strong positive correlations with Cu and Ni. The study also assessed the health risks associated with arsenic contamination, indicating that children in the municipality are more exposed to the noncarcinogenic effects of consuming high groundwater arsenic.
