Insights into nitrogen and phosphorus metabolic mechanisms of algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge via metagenomics: Performance, microbial community and functional genes

Wei Xiong et al.

Summary: Metagenomic analysis was used to propose the potential mechanism for the enhancement of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge (A-AGS). The results showed high removal rates for chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, total N, and total P in A-AGS. The enrichment of extracellular polymeric substances by algae promoted the formation of A-AGS. Functional gene analysis indicated enhanced nitrification, denitrification, and polyphosphate accumulation in A-AGS, with the dominant source of functional genes being the genus Thauera. The synergistic effect between bacteria and microalgae contributed to the improved N and P removal performance, showing potential for wastewater treatment applications.

Insight into the rapid biogranulation for suspended single-cell microalgae harvesting in wastewater treatment systems: Focus on the role of extracellular polymeric substances

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that the liquid fraction from crushed microalgae granules (AddL) contributes to rapid aggregation and efficient harvesting of microalgae during the solid-liquid separation process. This method can achieve harvesting efficiency of over 90%, providing a new approach for the practical application of microalgae in wastewater treatment.

Light-introduced partial nitrification in an algal-bacterial granular sludge bioreactor: Performance evolution and microbial community shift

Guangchao Si et al.

Summary: The study aims to evaluate the impact of light on the functioning of a partial nitrification algal-bacterial granular bioreactor and its nitrite accumulation mechanism. The results show that light plays a vital role in promoting the removal of ammonia nitrogen, enhancing the activities of both ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, and facilitating the formation of algal-bacterial granular sludge.

Comparison on the photogranules formation and microbial community shift between the batch and continuous-flow mode for the high saline wastewater treatment

Jing Zhu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the application of photogranules in high saline mariculture wastewater treatment. The results showed that the internal circulating photogranular membrane bioreactor (IC-PMBR) exhibited better pollutant removal performance than the internal circulating photogranular sequencing batch bioreactor (IC-PSBR). The study also identified the key players in photogranules and demonstrated the role of different microorganisms in nitrogen and phosphate removal.

Pollution Control of Industrial Mariculture Wastewater: A Mini-Review

Lina Zheng et al.

Summary: With the development of intensive mariculture, the discharge of mariculture wastewaters containing residual feed and excrements has caused coastal pollution. This paper proposes feasible pollution control methods for mariculture wastewaters based on their characteristics. It suggests precipitation, nitrification and denitrification, and ecological methods for ammonia-based wastewater, while denitrification filters and ecological methods are recommended for nitrate-based wastewater. However, there are still challenges in treating industrial mariculture wastewater.

Comparative performance and technoeconomic analyses of two microalgae harvesting systems evaluated at a commercially relevant scale

Zhiying Lu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance, energy consumption, and costs of flocculation-based and filtration-based algal harvesting systems. It finds that the age of the algae culture affects harvest efficiency, and that the filtration-based method requires more energy input but produces a higher quality of algal biomass.

Nutritional Quality and Safety of the Spirulina Dietary Supplements Sold on the Slovenian Market

Jasmina Masten Rutar et al.

Summary: This study analyzed commercially available Spirulina supplements in Slovenia and found that they are a good source of calcium, phosphorous, potassium, and selenium. Pure Spirulina supplements are also a good source of essential and non-essential amino acids, as well as omega-6 fatty acids. However, the presence of additives led to significant variation in nutrient content, and there were many inappropriate declarations regarding the elemental content.

Simultaneous nitritation, denitritation and phosphorus removal in an algal-bacterial consortium system treating low-strength mariculture wastewater

Jiajing Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, an algal-bacterial consortium process was used for simultaneous removal of organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus from mariculture wastewater. High-throughput sequencing results showed that Nitrosomonus and Nitrospina were the dominant nitrifying genera in the process.

Salinity-induced microalgal-based mariculture wastewater treatment combined with biodiesel production

Chaofan Zhang et al.

Summary: Sea salt is a more effective trigger for treating wastewater (almost 100% total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal) and producing high-quality biodiesel (330 mg/L.d). The structure equation model (SEM) further demonstrates a weakening correlation between wastewater treatment performance and microalgal status with increasing sea salt concentrations. Additionally, metabolic analysis reveals enhanced photosynthesis may be the key motivator for favorable outcomes under sea salt stimulation.

Mariculture wastewater treatment with Bacterial-Algal Coupling System (BACS): Effect of light intensity on microalgal biomass production and nutrient removal

Yedong Gao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that under 5000 lux light intensity, microalgae showed the highest biomass productivity and efficient removal of COD, ammonia-nitrogen, and total phosphorus from mariculture wastewater. Under mixotrophic cultivation, microalgae exhibited a coordinated photosynthesis and heterotrophic metabolism, resulting in effective nutrient removal. This indicates the potential of microalgae in the treatment of mariculture wastewater.

Impacts of land use on water quality and the viability of bivalve shellfish mariculture in the UK: A case study and review for SW England

James L. Webber et al.

Summary: This study examines how land use impacts water quality and affects the viability of shellfish mariculture. The main water quality issue affecting shellfish mariculture in South West England is faecal material from agricultural runoff and municipal wastewater discharges. The research also evaluates possible changes in water quality conditions in the future and highlights potential trade-offs and synergies between land and water-based food production systems.
