Is ride-hailing competing or complementing public transport? A perspective from affordability

Si Qiao et al.

Summary: Previous studies have focused on estimating the substitution effect of ride-hailing on public transport for policy formulation. This study integrates small data (questionnaire) and big data (ride-hailing orders) to estimate the potential for public transport use in ride-hailing trips. The findings reveal that ride-hailing competes with and complements public transit, serving different purposes and target populations.

Exploring Travel Pattern Variability of Public Transport Users Through Smart Card Data: Role of Gender and Age

Shasha Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the variability of travel patterns is crucial for improving public transport services. In this study, we developed a novel measure that considers multiple dimensions of travel behavior to quantify intrapersonal and interpersonal variability in weekly public transport usage. Analyses based on smart card data and an anonymous cardholder database revealed the influence of gender and age on travel pattern variability.

Multivariate analysis of car-following behavior data using a coupled hidden Markov model

Yajie Zou et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the coupled hidden Markov model (CHMM) for analyzing driving behavior data and evaluates its applicability in driving behavior semantics and similarity analysis. The advantages of the CHMM model are demonstrated using a two-year naturalistic driving dataset, and it is found that the CHMM model with 3 hidden states provides the most appropriate driving behavior segmentation results.

Gender differences in elderly mobility in the United States

Suman Mitra et al.

Summary: This study revealed gender gaps in mobility patterns of older adults in the US, with significant differences across different clusters. Some clusters showed substantial gender gaps, while others exhibited positive differences. The findings can help transportation planners and policymakers understand the characteristics of the elderly population and develop measures to reduce gender disparities.

User acceptance of electric car-sharing services: The case of the Netherlands

Riccardo Curtale et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of six psychological constructs on behavioral intention to use one-way electric car-sharing services (ECS) based on an extension of UTAUT theory. Results show that social influence is the most important driver, followed by performance expectancy and personal attitude. Satisfaction with current means of transport and trust in transport companies also influence behavioral intention.

Examining public transport usage by older adults with smart card data: A longitudinal study in Japan

Shasha Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal and day-to-day variability in public transport usage by older adults, finding that older adults in highly developed areas and younger-old age group (aged 65-74) are more likely to exhibit high-frequency public transport usage and low seasonal variability. Additionally, the day-to-day variability in public transport usage by older adults is greater in more developed areas and appears to increase with age.
