A Study to Evaluate the Bioactivity Behavior and Electrical Properties of Hydroxyapatite/Ag2O-Borosilicate Glass Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications

Asma M. Alturki et al.

Summary: The nanocomposites prepared by mixing different contents of borosilicate glass and carbonated hydroxyapatite exhibited unexpected results during sintering, with the increase in borosilicate glass content leading to partial decomposition of the hydroxyapatite and enhanced bioactivity behavior, as well as improvements in mechanical properties including hardness, strength, and moduli.

Evaluation of the dynamic behavior, elastic properties, and in vitro bioactivity of some borophosphosilicate glasses for orthopedic applications

Waheed S. S. Abushanab et al.

Summary: This study used finite element modeling to predict the effects of increasing borate content on mechanical properties and dynamic behavior. The results showed that increasing borate content improved the deflect resistance of the glass samples by 39%, while shear stress and principle stress were not affected. Gradual increases in borate content also improved the bioactivity of the samples.

Combinatorial fluorapatite-based scaffolds substituted with strontium, magnesium and silicon ions for mending bone defects

Nasim Golafshan et al.

Summary: This study synthesized strontium modified fluorapatite (Sr-FAp) and magnesium silicon modified fluorapatite (Mg-SiFAp) bioceramics through mechanical alloying methodology. The doped elements decreased the crystallinity of FAp and enhanced osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. In vivo studies showed that strontium ion significantly promoted bone formation in fluorapatite.

The calcium dynamics of human dental pulp stem cells stimulated with tricalcium silicate-based cements determine their differentiation and mineralization outcome

Elanagai Rathinam et al.

Summary: This study investigated the Ca2+ responses of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) stimulated with two different tricalcium silicate-based (TCS-based) dental biomaterials, Biodentine and ProRoot white MTA. The findings showed that Biodentine released more Ca2+ in the culture medium compared to ProRoot WMTA, leading to altered intracellular Ca2+ dynamics and enhanced cellular mineralization potential. The biomaterial-specific Ca2+ dynamics influenced stem cell-related gene expression, cellular differentiation, and mineralization outcomes.
