Kunyong Yu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of different algorithms for detecting individual trees using remote sensing images. The results showed that the Mask R-CNN algorithm achieved the highest accuracy, followed by the LM algorithm and MCWS algorithm. The study also highlighted the requirements and limitations of each algorithm, with Mask R-CNN requiring additional training data and computational resources. Providing valuable information for selecting optimal approaches for detecting individual trees, this study contributes to the field of precision forest management.

Individual tree crown delineation in high-resolution remote sensing images based on U-Net

Maximilian Freudenberg et al.

Summary: We propose a deep learning-based framework for individual tree crown delineation in aerial and satellite images. The method creates irregular polygons for tree crown delineation instead of bounding boxes and provides a tree cover mask for areas that are not separable. It is trainable with low amounts of training data and does not require 3D height information. The results show that the approach can efficiently delineate individual tree crowns in high-resolution optical images.

Crown Structure Explains the Discrepancy in Leaf Phenology Metrics Derived from Ground- and UAV-Based Observations in a Japanese Cool Temperate Deciduous Forest

Noviana Budianti et al.

Summary: Crown-level green chromatic coordinate derived from UAV images poorly explained inter- and intra-species variations in spring leaf phenology, possibly due to early leaf emergence in below-crown vegetation. When influence of below-crown vegetation was removed from UAV images, estimates for leaf expansion and falling dates were more accurate.
