Seismic faults of the 2022 Mw 6.6 Menyuan, Qinghai earthquake and their implication for the regional seismogenic structures

Wanpeng Feng et al.

Summary: The Menyuan earthquake of magnitude 6.6 occurred on January 8th, 2022 in the Menyuan Basin, Qinghai. It was followed by over 600 aftershocks, with the largest having a magnitude of 5.1. The mainshock and most of the aftershocks were strike-slip events, and the seismic data and geodetic analysis provided insights into the characteristics of these seismic events.

A new approach for 2-D and 3-D precise measurements of ground deformation from optimized registration and correlation of optical images and ICA-based filtering of image geometry artifacts

Saif Aati et al.

Summary: High resolution satellite imagery provides unprecedented opportunities for monitoring Earth Surface changes in 2D and 3D. However, the exploitation of these data is challenging due to geometric distortions. This study proposes a new approach using multi-date and multi-platform high resolution optical imagery to extract high-quality surface displacement in 3D. The method outperforms traditional approaches and has been successfully applied to measure ground deformation caused by an earthquake sequence.

Strain Partitioning on the Western Haiyuan Fault System Revealed by the Adjacent 2016 Mw5.9 and 2022 Mw6.7 Menyuan Earthquakes

Heng Luo et al.

Summary: Using synthetic aperture radar images, researchers investigated the fault geometries and slip distributions of the adjacent 2016 M(w)5.9 and 2022 M(w)6.7 Menyuan earthquakes along the Haiyuan fault system. The findings suggest that strain was released separately on different fault planes, indicating strain partitioning. This partitioning is likely controlled by the ratio between interseismic shear and normal velocities and the fault structure beneath the Lenglongling segment. Consideration of seismic hazard due to both focal mechanisms is necessary along the western Haiyuan fault in northeastern Tibet.

Characterizing the Vs Profile from Surface Wave Data Using a Customized Artificial Jellyfish Search Algorithm

Rashed Poormirzaee et al.

Summary: A novel inversion algorithm based on the artificial jellyfish search algorithm is developed for inverting dispersion curves in surface wave analysis. The experimental results show that the algorithm performs fast, stable, and powerful in handling synthetic and real data, and it is more efficient in terms of parameter settings and iteration numbers compared to the traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm.

High-precision relocation of the aftershock sequence of the January 8, 2022, MS6.9 Menyuan earthquake

Liping Fan et al.

Summary: The 2022 Menyuan MS6.9 earthquake is the most destructive earthquake near the Lenglongling fault since 2016. The aftershocks are mainly concentrated at a depth of 7-12 km, and the aftershock sequence can be divided into two segments with different fault structures. The mainshock occurred at the conjunction of the TLS fault and LLL fault according to the surface traces and distribution of the earthquake sequence.

Seismic slip distribution and rupture model of the Lenglongling Fault Zone, northeastern Tibetan Plateau

Wenliang Jiang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the Lenglongling Fault Zone is an important geological structure in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, and offset landforms can be used to analyze the distribution of ancient earthquake slips, establish fault slip models, and study earthquake recurrence behavior. Additionally, the research found that both the eastern and western segments of the fault zone exhibit typical left-lateral strike-slip movement.
