A practical probabilistic approach for simulating life loss in an urban area associated with a dam-break flood

Ali EL Bilali et al.

Summary: The study proposes an integrated approach based on Monte Carlo Simulation, HEC-RAS 2D, and HEC-LifeSim models to simulate dam break events and evaluate their impact on life loss. By analyzing a case study in Sidi Yahya Zaer town, Morocco, the results show an exponential relationship between life loss and peak flow, and a comparison with historical events allows for the assessment of similar disasters in the area.

Deep learning methods for flood mapping: a review of existing applications and future research directions

Roberto Bentivoglio et al.

Summary: This paper reviews 58 recent publications on the use of deep learning techniques in flood management. The results show that models based on convolutional layers are generally more accurate, while models based on fully connected layers provide accurate results when combined with other statistical models. Deep learning models have shown improved accuracy compared to traditional methods and increased speed compared to numerical models. However, further research is needed to understand the application of deep learning in real-time flood warning and flood risk estimation, as well as addressing issues related to model generalization and uncertainty in output.

Synergistic Use of Geospatial Data for Water Body Extraction from Sentinel-1 Images for Operational Flood Monitoring across Southeast Asia Using Deep Neural Networks

Junwoo Kim et al.

Summary: The research presents a novel deep learning-based water body extraction model that utilizes Sentinel-1 data and various flood-related geospatial data, showing improved accuracy of up to 7.68% when compared to traditional methods. By customizing and optimizing the U-Net model to incorporate geospatial data, the study demonstrates the potential for operational flood monitoring using deep learning techniques.
