Segmentation of unhealthy leaves in cruciferous crops for early disease detection using vegetative indices and Otsu thresholding of aerial images

Kishore Dutta et al.

Summary: This study develops a method for automatic early disease detection by segmenting unhealthy leaves in cruciferous crops using color vegetative indices and Otsu's thresholding. The method is applied to aerial RGB images of kohlrabi plants with bare soil and weeds in the background under two different sunlight conditions. By redefining the vegetative index set using the M-statistic, the method demonstrates improved discrimination between healthy leaves, unhealthy leaves, and other backgrounds. The study suggests the need for tuning vegetative indices according to crop types for accurate identification of infected parts using image processing methods. The implications of this method in precision agriculture are discussed.

Towards Efficient Detection for Small Objects via Attention-Guided Detection Network and Data Augmentation

Xiaobin Wang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the challenging task of detecting small objects in UAV aerial images. It improves the performance of object detection by enhancing the data and network structure. The paper adopts data augmentation strategy and image pyramid mechanism to increase the number of small objects and handle dense objects. Additionally, attention mechanism and detection head are added to the network structure to better detect small objects. Experimental results demonstrate the significant improvement in small object detection using the proposed method.
