A thermal origin for super-high-frequency marsquakes

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: The dominant type of marsquakes detected is super-high-frequency marsquakes, accounting for over 60% of the total. However, the mechanism behind their occurrence remains unclear. One possible explanation is heat-induced ground motion caused by local thermal stress. By modeling heat conduction under InSight and analyzing diurnal and seasonal temperature variations, it is found that temperature changes >1 K only occur within 25 cm of the surface. The highest rate of temperature change coincides with the season when the dominant number of super-high-frequency marsquakes is observed, suggesting that thermal stress in shallow rocks on the surface or partially buried within 10 cm depth is the most likely cause.

Effects of salt content on desiccation cracks in the clay

Dongdong Li et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing sodium chloride content in saline soil reduces both water evaporation and crack development, as well as decreasing crack ratio, total length of crack network, average crack width, and fractal dimension of cracks. When the sodium chloride content reaches 16%, the soil surface is covered by salt and no cracks appear.

Sublimation-driven convection in Sputnik Planitia on Pluto

Adrien Morison et al.

Summary: The study reveals that convection driven by sublimation at the surface can easily produce the observed polygonal structures when assuming a smaller heat flux at the base of the ice layer. Alternatively, sustaining this regime with a higher heat flux is also possible, but would require a stronger viscosity contrast than commonly accepted.
