Assessment of metals pollution and subsequent ecological risk in water, sediments and vegetation from a shallow lake: a case study from Ranipet industrial town, Tamil Nadu, India

Muthyala Sai Chaithanya et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the distribution, sources, bioavailable fractions, and ecological risks of nine metals in water, sediment, and vegetation samples collected from a shallow lake in the industrial town of Ranipet, India. The study found that some metals exceeded the drinking water standards in lake water and sediment samples, and the plant samples showed potential for phytoremediation. Additionally, the study found that the distribution of aluminum, iron, and manganese was closely related to the presence of organic carbon.

Oil spill trajectory modelling and environmental vulnerability mapping using GNOME model and GIS

Abdul-Lateef Balogun et al.

Summary: This study developed an oil spill environmental vulnerability model to predict and map the oil slick trajectory pattern in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia. It found that seasonal variations significantly influence the vulnerability of coastal resources to marine oil spill, with significant impacts during the southwest monsoon period. The study also identified evaporation, floating, and spreading as major weathering processes of oil slick.

Oceanographic factors of oil pollution dispersion offshore the Nile Delta (Egypt) using GIS

Rasha M. Abou Samra et al.

Summary: Oil pollution is a global concern due to the rise in offshore oil production and transport. A study was conducted to map oceanographic parameters affecting oil pollution dispersion in the offshore zone of the Nile Delta, showing that sea surface temperature and coastal zone depth primarily influence the distribution of other parameters.

A spatiotemporal analysis of oil spill severity using a multi-criteria decision framework

Jake R. Nelson et al.

Summary: This paper explores the evaluation of oil spills and their coastal impacts, focusing on optimizing spill evaluations, response, and preparedness using the TOPSIS method to improve credibility. The results of the study can help guide preparedness efforts by highlighting geographic and seasonal nuances of potential spill impacts, and objectively assessing the severity of oil spills.

A data-driven approach to simulate the spatiotemporal variationes of chlorophyll-a in Chesapeake Bay

Xin Yu et al.

Summary: A data-driven modeling framework combining EOF analysis and machine-learning techniques was proposed to accurately simulate Chl-a concentration in aquatic ecosystems. The model performance was evaluated in Chesapeake Bay and found to be comparable or higher than previously applied 3D numerical models. The study suggests that data-driven approaches provide a promising way for future studies in coastal and estuarine systems.

Hyperspectral retrievals of phytoplankton absorption and chlorophyll-a in inland and nearshore coastal waters

Nima Pahlevan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the utility of hyperspectral radiometric measurements in improving the accuracy of detecting near-surface phytoplankton properties. Using a class of neural networks known as Mixture Density Networks, significant improvements in the retrieval of phytoplankton absorption spectra and chlorophyll-a concentration were observed compared to existing algorithms. Further research is recommended to optimize network architecture and extend training datasets to enhance model generalizability for more accurate aquatic remote sensing products.

Spatial variations in diffusive methane fluxes and the role of eutrophication in a subtropical shallow lake

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that eutrophication plays an important role in shaping the spatial distribution of diffusive CH4 fluxes in lakes, with parameters related to eutrophication having a significant positive relationship with CH4 emissions. Distance to shore and water depth are inversely correlated with CH4 emissions and modify the effects of eutrophication.

Detection of Wakashio oil spill off Mauritius using Sentinel-1 and 2 data: Capability of sensors, image transformation methods and mapping

Sankaran Rajendran et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the Wakashio oil spill incident near Mauritius using satellite data to monitor the spreading of the spill and its impact on the coastal environment. Different image processing methods were used to detect and classify the oil spill, and the accuracy of the results was validated through field studies. The study demonstrated the potential of satellite sensors and image processing techniques in detecting, monitoring, and assessing the impact of oil spills on the environment.
