Spatial-temporal assessment and modeling of ecological security based on land-use/cover changes (case study: Lavasanat watershed)

Y. Moarrab et al.

Summary: Spatial-temporal land-use changes in the Lavasanat watershed from 2000 to 2020 have seen significant growth in residential areas due to population growth and increased housing demand, while agricultural lands have decreased. Uncontrolled real estate development has disrupted the ecological structure by replacing large patches of agricultural lands with smaller, lower-value patches. The expansion of built land-uses has led to increased water yield and runoff, causing potential environmental consequences like soil erosion, reduced groundwater recharge, and contaminant displacement that threaten regional ecological security.

The mediation effect of land surface temperature in the relationship between land use-cover change and energy consumption under seasonal variations

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship among land use-cover change, land surface temperature (LST), and building electricity consumption in Nanjing, China from 1990 to 2018. The results showed that LST mediates the relationship between land use-cover change and electricity consumption, with a particularly significant effect in summer. The direct effect of land use-cover change on electricity consumption was found to be stronger than the indirect effect. These findings are important for urban planners to effectively manage land use and mitigate LST increases and electricity consumption.

Heterogeneous Urban Thermal Contribution of Functional Construction Land Zones: A Case Study in Shenzhen, China

Han Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contribution of different functional construction land zones (FCLZs) to the urban thermal environment and analyzes their thermal responses. The results show significant differences in the total contribution and thermal effects within FCLZs. The study also reveals both differences and consistencies in the responses of surface temperature to environmental indicators in FCLZs. The findings contribute to a better understanding of urban thermal warming mechanisms and provide insights for adjusting environmental indicators in urban planning.

Land use/cover change analysis in the Mediterranean region: a regional case study of forest evolution in Castello (Spain) over 50 years

Rafael Delgado-Artes et al.

Summary: The second half of the 20th century witnessed rural abandonment in the Mediterranean regions, leading to an increase in forest cover. This change has resulted in large-scale wildfires, often attributed to climate change. This research focused on understanding the forest evolution after land abandonment, and the results showed an increase in forest density with varying rates of evolution depending on site conditions.

Land Use Land/Cover Change Reduces Woody Plant Diversity and Carbon Stocks in a Lowland Coastal Forest Ecosystem, Tanzania

Lucas Theodori Ntukey et al.

Summary: The East-African lowland coastal forest is an important biodiversity hotspot in Africa. However, deforestation and land use changes have led to a decline in forest cover and an increase in agriculture and grassland. The study also found that forest areas stored significantly more carbon compared to other land types.

Spatio-Temporal Dynamic and Structural Characteristics of Land Use/Cover Change Based on a Complex Network: A Case Study of the Middle Reaches of Yangtze River Urban Agglomeration

Zhao Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the changes in land use/cover in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River urban agglomeration and the spatial differences between its core regions. A complex network approach was employed to identify important land use types, key change paths, and transformation patterns. The results showed that there has been a significant increase in building land area, while crop land and forest area have been decreasing. The three core regions displayed distinct differences in terms of land use transfer intensity, structural adjustment, and spatial distribution. Crop land and water bodies were identified as key land use types in the land use transition network, with increasing influence from building land and forest over time. The study also found stable transfer patterns between different land use types in different periods.

Untangling the effects of climate change and land use/cover change on spatiotemporal variation of evapotranspiration over China

Xiaoyang Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the interannual variation and spatial distribution characteristics of evapotranspiration (ET) in China from 2005 to 2020 using the Priestley-Taylor Jet Propulsion Laboratory (PT-JPL) model. The contributions of climate change and land use/land cover change (LUCC) to ET variation were quantified, and the results showed that climate change had a greater impact on ET than LUCC. Temperature and net radiation were identified as the most critical factors affecting ET on a national scale.
