Preliminary evaluation of the properties and biodegradability of glycerol- and sorbitol-plasticized potato-based bioplastics

J. S. Ng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of plasticizers on the properties and biodegradability of potato-based bioplastic, revealing that plasticized films were more flexible with lower tensile strength and higher elongation at break value. The addition of plasticizers effectively reduced the swelling and water retaining capacity of potato-based biodegradable plastic films.

A Comprehensive Review on the Emerging Roles of Nanofillers and Plasticizers towards Sustainable Starch-Based Bioplastic Fabrication

Shiou Xuan Tan et al.

Summary: Petroleum-based plastics pose environmental pollution problems due to their non-biodegradable and toxic properties, but renewable and biodegradable bioplastics have the potential to replace them. The fabrication of bioplastic films requires a delicate mixture of film-forming agents, plasticizers, and solvents. Research has focused on enhancing bioplastics' performance by using environmentally friendly nanoparticles. This review paper highlights the influencing factors on the properties of starch-based bioplastics and discusses their formation mechanism.

Development of Starch-Based Bioplastic from Jackfruit Seed

Trieu Khoa Nguyen et al.

Summary: In this article, jackfruit seed starch plasticized with common plasticizers was developed and characterized. The research papers on starch-based bioplastics were analyzed, and jackfruit seeds were selected as a starch source. A fabrication procedure for starch-based bioplastics was proposed and different combinations of plasticizers were used to fabricate four types of bioplastics for studying the effect of plasticizers and characterizing their properties. Tensile testing and SEM characterization showed the hardness and plasticity of the fabricated bioplastics. Despite having lower mechanical properties than petroleum-based plastics, they are considered as environmentally friendly materials with high potential.

Effect of glycerol plasticizer loading on the physical, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties of arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea) starch biopolymers

J. Tarique et al.

Summary: This study investigated the development of arrowroot starch films with glycerol as a plasticizer, showing improvements in physical, mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties of the films. Increasing glycerol concentration resulted in higher film thickness and moisture content, while reducing tensile strength and modulus. The findings provide valuable insights into the potential for biodegradable food packaging.
