Progress in the modification of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes: A performance review for wastewater treatment

Tausif Ahmad et al.

Summary: Various industries generate wastewater containing toxic contaminants, and low-cost polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has attracted attention as a membrane material. However, fouling of hydrophobic PVC membranes is a major hindrance. To improve their performance, the hydrophilicity and fouling resistance properties of the PVC membranes should be enhanced. This review provides an overview of current trends, research, and developments in PVC membranes and discusses potential approaches for improving their performance.

PVC/EVA-based polymer inclusion membranes with improved stability and Cr(VI) extraction capacity: Water plasticization effect

Ferhat Sellami et al.

Summary: Polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) based on PVC and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) were prepared and investigated for Cr(VI) extraction from aqueous media. The composition of PIMs was optimized and the physical-chemical properties of the resulting membranes were analyzed. The results showed that PIMs containing EVA40 and PVC were more efficient for Cr(VI) extraction compared to those with only PVC. The addition of tetradecanol improved the water plasticizing effect and increased the stability of the membrane.

Structure, thermal and dielectric insights of PVC/PVP/ZnFe2O4 polymer nanocomposites

Alhulw H. Alshammari et al.

Summary: In this study, polymer nanocomposite samples were prepared by the solution casting method with nano-zinc ferrite doping. XRD confirmed the cubic crystal structure of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles with an average size of 15 nm. The addition of ZnFe2O4 to the polymers blend (PVC/PVP) resulted in different absorption bands in the FTIR spectra. Furthermore, the thermal decomposition stages showed a decrease in activation energy, enthalpy, and Gibbs free energy with increasing zinc ferrite concentration. The dielectric data revealed lower values of dielectric constant with higher ZnFe2O4 content in the polymer, and the AC conductivity increased gradually with frequency while DC conductivity values decreased up to 15.0 wt% zinc ferrite concentration.
