Synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester from galactaric acid via dimethyl carbonate chemistry

Giacomo Trapasso et al.

Summary: A convenient and simple one-pot method for the synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester (FDME) from galactaric acid using dimethyl carbonate (DMC) chemistry is presented in this study. The optimal reaction conditions were determined to be the reaction of galactaric acid with DMC in the presence of Amberlyst-36 at 200 degrees C for 2 hours. Under these conditions, FDME was obtained as the main product with a 70% yield. The reaction intermediates were identified and a possible reaction mechanism was proposed.

Jingkun Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the properties of various agar/gelatin composite films modified by cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), as well as agar/gellan gum and agar/kappa-carrageenan composite films modified by CNC and calcium chloride. The results showed that these composite films had dense and smooth surface structures, with high tensile strength, elongation at break, and light transmittance, along with low water swelling rate, water solubility, and water vapor permeability. These films not only exhibited better comprehensive properties than existing studies, but also showed good performance in preserving strawberries.

Biodegradable Poly(butylene succinate) Copolyesters Modified by Bioresoured 2,5-Tetrahydrofurandimethanol

Chenhao Jin et al.

Summary: The problems of fossil-based resources and pollution caused by traditional nondegradable polymers have led to the need for biobased monomers and polyesters. In this study, 2,5-Tetrahydrofurandimethanol (THFDM) was introduced into polybutylene succinate (PBS) to improve its performance and sustainability. The results showed that the introduction of THFDM reduced the crystallization ability of PBTS, improving degradation rate and toughness while maintaining a relatively high gas barrier property.

Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS): Materials, processing, and industrial applications

Massimiliano Barletta et al.

Summary: The development of biodegradable and compostable materials, such as polybutylene succinate (PBS), as alternatives to fossil-based plastics is highly important. PBS is a compostable aliphatic polyester with good mechanical strength and thermal resistance. However, it is often blended with other polymers, fillers, and additives to improve processability and mechanical performance. Recent advances in polymer blending processes have made PBS blends an interesting material platform for applications requiring a balance of mechanical strength, flexibility, thermal resistance, and compostability.

Xylose-Based Polyethers and Polyesters Via ADMET Polymerization toward Polyethylene-Like Materials

Marco Piccini et al.

Summary: This study explores the structure-properties relationships of polyesters and polyethers derived from bioderived sources through metathesis polymerization. The research shows that polymers can be modified postpolymerization by reacting their internal carbon-carbon double bonds, leading to lower glass transition temperatures and the insertion of additional functional groups. The resulting materials exhibit properties that can compete with polyolefins like polyethylene, with semicrystalline polymers showing remarkable polyethylene-like characteristics in film form.

Effect of molecular weight of Poly(ethylene glycol) on plasticization of Poly (L-lactic acid)

Jianwei Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) was plasticized with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to improve its brittleness, and the effects of PEG molecular weight and content on the properties of PLLA/PEG blends were systematically studied. The competition between phase separation and PLLA crystallization was found to determine the final structures and physical properties of PLLA/PEG blends, with different PEG contents and molecular weights influencing the crystallization form and mechanical properties of the blends.
