Digital Image Correlation Method for Detecting Strain in Wood Drying Process

Haojie Chai et al.

Summary: Using digital image correlation (DIC), this study monitored displacement and strain changes during wood drying in real-time. The results showed that as wood dried below the fiber saturation point, the difference between radial and tangential shrinkage ratio increased gradually. Analysis of the shrinkage ratio revealed that it was relatively stable in the early stage, gradually increased in the middle stage, and the tangential shrinkage ratio was about twice as large as the radial shrinkage ratio in the later stage. The DIC technology proved to be stable and reliable for monitoring stress and strain changes during wood drying.

Novel risk assessment tools for the climate-induced mechanical decay of wooden structures: Empirical and machine learning approaches

A. Califano et al.

Summary: This study focuses on analyzing the indoor relative humidity (RH) of Ringebu Church in Norway, a historical building made entirely of Scots pine wood. A novel strategy called Median of Data Strategy (MoDS) is proposed to identify RH drops and assess the risk of degradation of wooden assets. Additionally, an empirical model for computing hygro-mechanical stress and a machine learning approach for predicting the effects of climatic fluctuations on historical wooden materials are described. The findings provide useful insights for assessing decay risk and future investigations in fracture mechanics, fatigue behavior, and smart timeseries prediction for conservation and preservation purposes.

Full-field tracking and analysis of shrinkage strain during moisture content loss in wood

Zongying Fu et al.

Summary: Anisotropic shrinkage is a key feature in wood drying processes, as shown in this study through full-field strain measurements. The variations in shrinkage strains from pith to bark were examined, with tangential strains higher at the poles compared to the center. The study also found that both expansion and shrinkage in tangential direction were greater than radial counterparts, with a transition occurring at a moisture content region of 32-28%.
