Impacts of Bond Type and Grafting Density on the Thermal, Structural, and Transport Behaviors of Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials-Based Electrolytes

Tony G. Feric et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of bond type on the thermal, structural, and transport properties of tethered polymers in Nanoscale Organic Hybrid Materials (NOHMs) was investigated. The results elucidate how bond type and grafting density can be used to tune the properties of NOHMs.

Synthesis of novel Al2O3 nanoparticle organic hybrid materials for enhancing the CO2-separation performance of prepared Al2O3-NOHMs/Pebax mixed matrix membrane

Han -Yu Qiu et al.

Summary: A novel liquid-like nanoparticle organic hybrid materials (NOHMs) called Al2O3-NOHMs was synthesized and used for improving the performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for CO2 capture. The Al2O3-NOHMs showed unique enthalpy effect and entropy effect, breaking through the trade-off effect of membrane separation process. The gas separation tests demonstrated that the Al2O3-NOHMs/Pebax mixed matrix membranes exhibited enhanced CO2 permeability and selectivity, outperforming the Robeson upper bound.

Structural and Dynamical Coupling in Solvent-Free Polymer Brushes Elucidated by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Yi-Yen Chang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the chain configuration and dynamics of interacting solvent-free polymer brushes through molecular dynamics simulations. It reveals that systems with longer chain lengths and/or higher grafting densities result in more stretched brush conformations and reduced interbrush mixing. Additionally, high-density grafting disrupts standard relaxation dynamics prediction and showcases collaboration between polymers of different lengths in brush configurations.

Polymerization and Structure of Opposing Polymer Brushes Studied by Computer Simulations

Krzysztof Halagan et al.

Summary: A model of the polymerization process was designed and investigated for the formation of a pair of polymer brushes. Simulations revealed that under high grafting densities, chains were compressed and showed little interpenetration between opposite surfaces.

Vapor sorption in binary polymer brushes: The effect of the polymer-polymer interface

Leon A. Smook et al.

Summary: Polymer brushes can attract solvent vapors for polymers, and enhancing vapor sorption by incorporating two incompatible polymers A and B in the brushes. A model is proposed to describe this enhanced sorption and design parameters are suggested for optimal vapor absorption in coatings composed of binary brushes.

Interactions between Sterically Stabilized Nanoparticles: The Effects of Brush Bidispersity and Chain Stiffness

Sergei A. Egorov

Summary: The Density Functional Theory is employed to investigate structural properties and interactions between solvent-free polymer-grafted nanoparticles, focusing on the effects of grafting density, grafted chain length, and stiffness on brush-brush overlap and attractive interaction strength. The theory results are compared with simulation data, showing good quantitative agreement.

Gas Transport in Interacting Planar Brushes

Sabin Adhikari et al.

Summary: By studying the simpler case of two interacting planar brushes, it is found that gas molecules have accelerated dynamics near the grafting surface but slower dynamics in the central region of the brush. Gas molecules exhibit hop-like motions in the brush layers, spending most of their time in regions of fast transport separated by motions where they hop between surfaces. These phenomena in combination lead to an overall speedup in gas dynamics in the brush layers compared to a polymer melt, in good agreement with experimental data.
