Rotational molding of polylactide (PLA) composites filled with copper slag as a waste filler from metallurgical industry

Mateusz Barczewski et al.

Summary: Research has shown that using waste-based fillers in the production of PLA-based composites can increase hardness and stiffness, with filler concentrations up to 35%. For filler contents below 20%, the composite materials exhibit good structural stability and acceptable mechanical performance. Despite the lack of surface modification, the adhesion between PLA and the filler was beneficial.

Antioxidant activity of mango seed wax additive on the properties of poly(lactic acid) transparent films for food packaging application

Tesi Thomas et al.

Summary: In this study, mango seed wax (MSW) was used as a plasticizing additive to improve the tensile properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) packaging film. The results showed that the addition of MSW increased the tensile strength and elongation at break, and improved the barrier and thermal properties of the PLA film. The optimized sample (PLA with 5% MSW) exhibited the best performance.

Improvement of Electret Properties of Polylactide by Loading Mineral Fillers

Mansur Galikhanov et al.

Summary: The article investigates the impact of fine mineral fillers on the properties of electret materials made from polylactide. The study finds that a 4% fillers content in the polymer composition yields the best performances. Loading of the fillers slightly increases the specific volume resistivity, while having no significant effect on the chemical structure, glass transition temperature, and melting point of polylactide. The addition of fillers reduces the melt flow index and elongation at a break, with minimal changes in ultimate tensile strength.

P. Ramesh et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding MMT clay can enhance the performance of PLA-hybrid biocomposites, especially with 1% addition showing better mechanical properties and abrasion resistance. Furthermore, PLA-bio and hybrid biocomposites exhibit higher modulus compared to pure-PLA.

Super Tough Polylactic Acid Plasticized with Epoxidized Soybean Oil Methyl Ester for Flexible Food Packaging

Arkadiusz Zych et al.

Summary: The research team developed flexible PLA materials by plasticizing them with renewable and biodegradable epoxidized soybean oil methyl ester, achieving elongations at break of nearly 800%. The lubricating effect of the plasticizer allowed for more sustainable extrusion at a low temperature of 140 degrees C, preventing PLA degradation and saving energy in the process. Plasticized films also produced less acoustic noise during handling, which is important for food packaging applications.
