A new strategy to improve the toughness of epoxy thermosets by introducing the thermoplastic epoxy

Duo Chen et al.

Summary: The novel thermoplastic epoxy (TPE) constructed through solution polymerization process can significantly improve the performance of epoxy thermosets, enhancing mechanical properties such as tensile strength and flexural strength. This improvement is mainly attributed to the good compatibility with DGEBA and DGEBA-based thermosets, as well as the formation of semi-IPN structure.

Effect of the Addition of Thermoplastic Resin and Composite on Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Epoxy Resin

Jingyu Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reinforcement and toughening of epoxy resin through the addition of thermoplastic resin and composite fillers. The results demonstrate that the mechanical and thermal properties of the epoxy resin can be significantly improved by adding thermoplastic fillers at the appropriate mass ratio. The research findings have important implications for the recycling and reutilization of thermoplastic composites and the enhancement of epoxy resin performance.

Waterborne polyurethane and its nanocomposites: a mini-review for anti-corrosion coating, flame retardancy, and biomedical applications

Jianchen Cai et al.

Summary: Waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) are environmentally friendly alternatives to solvent-borne polyurethanes. The properties of WPU can be tailored by choosing different monomers and monomer ratios. This mini-review discusses the synthesis of WPU, the influence of materials on their properties, and strategies to improve their performance. The structure-property relationship for their end-use applications is also emphasized.

Flexible polystyrene/graphene composites with epsilon-near-zero properties

Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the fabrication and characterization of flexible polystyrene/graphene (PS/GR) composites with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) properties at radio frequency. The addition of graphene nanosheets in PS matrix led to the formation of a continuous conductive network, resulting in the observation of ENZ behavior at around 920 kHz. This research demonstrates the potential of flexible PS/GR composites in applications such as invisibility cloaks, drug delivery, and soft robotics.

Effect of carbon nanotubes on the interface evolution and dielectric properties of polylactic acid/ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer nanocomposites

Ping Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the PLA/EVA-g-GMA/EVA/CNTs composites were prepared by melt-blended method, and the effects of CNTs on the interfacial morphological evolution and dielectric properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the introduction of CNTs slightly decreased the mechanical properties of the materials, but significantly improved the dielectric properties and thermal stability of the composites.

Cheng-Ho Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, novel κ-aluminum oxide (κ-Al2O3) nanosheets and carboxyl-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile (CTBN) liquid rubber were homogeneously mixed in epoxy resin to fabricate κ-Al2O3/CTBN/epoxy nanocomposites. The addition of 5 phr of κ-Al2O3 nanosheets significantly improved the mechanical properties of the composite materials, as well as increased thermal stability and glass transition temperatures.

Synergistic toughening of epoxy resin by CTBN and CM-β-CD

Xiangyun Yin et al.

Summary: The addition of CTBN significantly improves the toughness of epoxy resin but decreases its glass transition temperature and modulus, while the addition of CM-β-CD results in a slight increase in modulus and T-g, and a significant improvement in toughness. This work provides a promising pathway for nanocomposites with excellent toughness, with toughening mechanisms attributed to interfacial micro-cracks and energy dissipation of CM-β-CD.
