Single-process 3D-printed stacked dielectric actuator

Tibor Barsi Palmic et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the first monolithic 3D-printed stacked dielectric actuators (SDEAs) using a commercially accessible extrusion 3D printer and thermoplastic filaments. The challenges of single-process fabrication of the dielectric layer and electrodes, repeatability and reliability of the 3D-printed thin dielectric layer, and layer stacking were successfully addressed. Four actuators with different active areas and stacked active layers were 3D printed and their functionality was demonstrated through dynamic electromechanical characterization. These actuators show promise for applications requiring high-frequency resonators or high controllability in the sub-resonance region.

The use of locally resonant metamaterials to reduce flow-induced noise and vibration

F. A. Pires et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally assesses the potential of locally resonant metamaterials (LRMs) in suppressing flow-induced noise and vibration in coupled vibro-acoustic systems. The vibrations of a flat plate under turbulent flow excitation are measured and analyzed, and different LRM solutions are designed to reduce the vibrations. The noise radiation from the plate into a hard-walled backing cavity is evaluated, and the plate is then treated with the designed LRM configurations. The results show that the LRM solutions effectively reduce the vibrations and noise radiation of the system.
